Two ERDC researchers earn Black Engineer of the Year awards
At the office, LaKenya Walker spends her time using high-performance computing to help the military better understand its weapon systems. Cameron Thomas works just a few buildings away as an expert in explosive weapons effects. Though their jobs are a bit different, the two U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center employees now have something very special in common—they are both winners of the 2020 Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA) for Modern Day Technology Leaders.

Two from TAD receive Civilian Service Achievement Medal

Fishtrap Lake Cleanup Continues
Recent flood events have left Fishtrap Lake in Shelbiana, Ky., with a large amount of drift and debris to remove. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Pike County have worked together to remove that material, and so far more than 2,000 cubic yards of drift and more than 200 cubic yards of trash has been removed.

Federal agencies release Columbia River System Operations draft environmental impact statement and preferred alternative
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Reclamation and Bonneville Power Administration today released the Columbia River System Operations draft environmental impact statement for a 45-day public review and comment period from February 28 - April 13, 2020. The draft includes the Preferred Alternative for the operations, maintenance and configuration of the 14 federal dam and reservoir projects that comprise the Columbia River System.

Mississippi River Commission schedules high-water inspection trip
The Mississippi River Commission will conduct its annual high-water inspection trip on the Mississippi River, March 29– April 3, 2020. Four public meetings have been scheduled aboard the Motor Vessel MISSISSIPPI in selected towns along the river. Commission members will meet with local partners, stakeholders and residents and hear their concerns, ideas and issues.

USACE Galveston celebrates Black History Month
The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District celebrated African American Black History Month 20 Feb. at the Jadwin Building. The guest speaker was Mr. Frank Jackson, Assistant Vice Chancellor for State Relations, Texas A&M University System, Prairie View A&M University. Jackson spoke about African American History from Ancient time to the present day. He informed the audience of the grandeur of the African civilizations prior to the slavery of Africans in the western hemisphere. His central theme was the oneness of the human family on the planet earth.

Vicksburg District provides updated forecast for region - Feb. 25
VICKSBURG, Miss. -- The Mississippi River is expected to crest at Arkansas City, Arkansas, at 39.5 feet Feb. 28; Greenville, Mississippi, at 51.3 feet Feb. 28; Vicksburg, Mississippi, at 47.8 feet Feb. 29; and Natchez, Mississippi, at 55 feet March 1. These projections are based on two days of forecasted rainfall and will changed based on future rainfall.

Work Plan increases Vicksburg District funding for fiscal year 2020
VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District has announced that its Work Plan for the 2020 fiscal year includes $102 million in funding for its civil works program, the largest amount of funding since the 2013 fiscal year. The Work Plan will fund projects, programs and activities that received funding in the three previous fiscal years and will prioritize ongoing work that can reach significant milestones or produce significant outputs during the 2020 fiscal year.

USACE Galveston District awards $12.2M contract for Texas City repairs
GALVESTON, Texas (February 19, 2020) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District (USACE Galveston) has awarded a contract in the amount of $12,221,180 to Pontchartrain Partners, LLC., for repair of damage to the Texas City Hurricane Flood Protection Project caused by Hurricane Harvey.

Vicksburg District provides updated forecast for region - Feb. 18
VICKSBURG, Miss. -- The National Weather Service has forecasted two-to-four inches of rain across most of the Lower Mississippi River Valley over the next seven days. The Mississippi River is expected to crest at Arkansas City, Arkansas, at 39 feet Feb. 25; Greenville, Mississippi, at 50.5 feet Feb. 26; Vicksburg, Mississippi, at 47 feet Feb. 27; and Natchez, Mississippi, at 54.5 feet Feb. 29. Sardis, Grenada lakes cancel Fish Habitat Day events due to high water
VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District’s Sardis and Grenada lakes have canceled their Fish Habitat Day events scheduled for Feb. 22 and 29, respectively. The events have been canceled due to increased lake elevations from recent rainfall. Flood control structures at Sardis, Grenada and Enid lakes, three of the district’s four flood control reservoirs in the Yazoo Basin, were closed Feb. 10 to store excess rainfall, or runoff. The reservoirs’ gates are expected to open within the next three-to-five days.

Benefit St. to close between Eads and Deers Streets
Work related to the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project (SELA). The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District will temporarily close Benefit Street to traffic between Eads Street and Deers Street for work related to the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control project. Weather permitting; Construction closure is scheduled to begin on Monday, February 17th and last until Friday March 27, 2020. This temporary closure is related to the construction of new box culverts to enhance the drainage in the area. Street closure will not impact regularly scheduled garbage collection.

Corps awards a $37M contract to complete final repairs on Missouri River Levee System L-550
