Levees are a vital part of modern flood risk management. They are part of flood defense systems that may also include flood walls, pumping stations, gates closures, and other associated structures. These elements work together to reduce risk to human life and reduce economic damages from flood events.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today it is extending the comment period on the draft first edition of the National Levee Safety Guidelines to Aug. 31, 2024. The guidelines were developed with stakeholder input under the National Levee Safety Program and released for public review on April 1, 2024.

The National Levee Safety Guidelines are intended to provide best practices and serve as a resource to help achieve nationwide consistency in improving the reliability of levees and resilience of communities behind levees.

Topics in the draft first edition range from basic levee concepts and terminology to strategies for reducing flooding impacts to people, property, and the environment. Considerations for climate change impacts on levees, integrating natural and nature-based features, and needs of underserved communities are woven throughout the document.

In addition to the guidelines, the comment period for the companion document, “Best Practices for Vegetation Management on Levees,” has also been extended to Aug. 31, 2024. This document provides detailed information about the current thinking related to practices for vegetation management on or near levees.

Stakeholders, tribes, community members and others who have an interest in levees are encouraged to provide comments on both documents, which are available for download at: https://www.leveesafety.org/pages/nlsg. Topic-specific webinars on the guidelines were held in April and May and recordings are also available on the website.

Comments can be emailed to: hq-leveesafety@usace.army.mil, submitted through the Federal Register under Docket #COE-2021-0007, or mailed to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District; ATTN: Levee Safety Center – Room 221; 4155 East Clay Street, Vicksburg, MS 39183.
