    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 16, 2023) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District showcased two of its mega construction projects on the Tennessee River and its hydropower rehabilitation efforts at Barkley Dam on the Cumberland River last week to the assistant secretary of the Army for Civil Works.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, awarded a construction contract for Kissimmee River Restoration (KRR) Project Navigational Warning Signage, located in Okeechobee and Highlands Counties, Florida. The non-Federal sponsor for the Kissimmee River Restoration Project is the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD). USACE awarded the contract for $2,645,604.74 to Eagle Engineering & Land Development, Inc., Naples, Florida, on September 28, 2023.

    The tow haulage equipment at David D. Terry Lock (No. 6) NM 108.1 is currently out of service. Double cut tows will have to be locked the conventional way (without the use of tow haulage). Another notice will be distributed when the tow haulage equipment is back in service.
  • Corps of Engineers is lowering the Mississippi River level in Minneapolis for maintenance at Lock and Dam 1

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, are lowering the Mississippi River water elevations between Lower St. Anthony Falls and Lock and Dam 1, both in Minneapolis, starting Oct. 13.

(Oct. 10, 2023) – Local communities, residents and officials celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Cordell Hull Dam Oct. 7 by paying tribute to residents that were displaced, featuring historical aspects of the dam’s construction, and noting the benefits that were realized for future generations when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers impounded the lake.

    Mariners should expect to experience intermittent delays at Dardanelle Lock (No. 10) NM 205.5 between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m on October 19, 2023. The intermittent delays are required to facilitate underwater dive operations in the Lock chamber.
  • September runoff near average; Drought conditions continue in Missouri River Basin

    The month of September brought mixed results for precipitation across the Missouri River Basin. Portions of Montana, North and South Dakota, and Nebraska received above average rainfall, while the remainder of the upper basin and lower basin were below average. Overall, September runoff in the Missouri River Basin above Sioux City, Iowa was 1.3 million acre-feet, 109% of the long-term average. The annual runoff forecast for the upper Missouri River Basin above Sioux City, IA is 29.1 MAF, 113% of average and the same as last month’s forecast.
  • Development and Characterization of Ultra-High-Performance Concrete for the Rehabilitation of Navigation Lock Structures

    Abstract: This report details the history of vertical lock wall repairs and the development and laboratory characterization of an ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) using locally sourced materials for improved durability of lock walls subjected to impact and abrasion from navigational vessels. This UHPC, referred to as Lock-Tuf, has been designed for use in a precast environment with ambient curing methods and serves as a material proof-of-concept for future lock wall rehabilitations. Mechanical properties such as unconfined compressive strength, flexural response, tensile capacity, impact resistance, and abrasion resistance have been quantified experimentally.
