• 13-054 Mill Creek’s north-shore trail to temporarily close for riprap placement

    WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Parts of the paved trail on the north side of the Mill Creek channel will be temporarily closed to all visitors on Monday, Aug. 5, through Thursday, Aug. 8, while channel maintenance activities occur in the creek, just below the dam.

The river was only a few feet from the top of the St. Louis flood wall, and had already overwhelmed many smaller levees throughout the region. The Flood of 1993 claimed dozens of lives, incurred billions of dollars in damages, and forever changed many communities along the river.
  • Carol Ann Murphy Retires After 26 Years With Vicksburg District

    Vicksburg, Miss… Carol Ann Murphy of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District is retiring after 26 years of service. Murphy began her career in the Contracting Office as a procurement technician and later transferred to the Safety Office as an office administration assistant. She was presented the “Commander’s Award for Civilian Service” by Colonel John W. Cross, Vicksburg District Commander, at a retirement ceremony recognizing her exceptional service.
  • Corps awards contract for work on new electric barrier

    The district awarded a contract July 31, 2013, for construction of water structures as part of a new electric barrier in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal in Romeoville, Ill. This is as an upgrade to the demonstration barrier that has been online since 2002. The barriers are operated to deter the inter-basin establishment of Asian carp and other fish through an electric field in the water.

    Colonel Jon J. Chytka assumes command as the 51st District Engineer in the history of the Mobile District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in a ceremony Aug. 1, 2013 at the Alabama Cruise Terminal. Chytka succeeds Colonel Steven J. Roemhildt, who had been the commander and district engineer since May 26, 2010.
