  • SWD, Texas Ports partner to address current issues, future needs

    Officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Southwestern Division met with representatives from Texas Ports and the Texas Department of Transportation in Galveston, Texas, June 20, to identify current areas of need and discuss opportunities to improve the infrastructure that supports the Texas Coast and its immense economic impact on both Texas and the Nation. The meeting, held in conjunction with the Texas Water Conservation Association’s mid-year conference in Galveston, provided an opportunity for Corps and state officials to look at current ways of doing business as well as identify means to improve customer relationships and support.

  • Water Management: Corps’ Southwestern Division partners to build a resilient, reliable water resources portfolio

    The cycles of drought and flooding that have defined Texas and much of the southwest over the years have presented many challenges in water management, all intensified by the large gains in population and industry that the area has seen. With 28 reservoirs in Texas with storage set aside for water supply, and 74 multipurpose water reservoirs within the region, the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Southwestern Division has been in the forefront, working with state and local governments and other stakeholders to ensure they are able to meet the water needs of the area. SWD participated in the Texas Water Conservation Organization’s Mid-Year Conference in Galveston, Texas, June 19-21 to discuss its role in water management and efforts to build a resilient and reliable portfolio that meets the current and future water resources needs for the region.

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (June 19, 2013) – Eleven members of the Mekong River Commission were briefed on how management of operations on the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers affect Mississippi River operations during their June 18-19, 2013 visit to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District.

  • Jamestown and Pipestem Reservoirs Update

    Heavy rain has fallen over the past few days in the James River basin downstream of Jamestown and Pipestem Reservoirs. The combined reservoir release was reduced on June 20 from 1200 cfs to 900 cfs. Potential for heavy rain continues for the next several days, so the combined release rate of 900 cfs will be held through the weekend.

  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to hold public meeting on the Bushnell Army Airfield former gas yard

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District will hold a public meeting Wednesday, June 26 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Bushnell Community Center, 407 E. Belt Avenue. Corps representatives will explain the Proposed Plan for the former gas yard located at the Bushnell Army Airfield Formerly Used Defense Site.

  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to hold public meeting on Brooksville Turret Gunnery Range

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District will hold a public meeting Tuesday, June 25 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Central High School, 14075 Ken Austin Parkway, Brooksville, Fla. Corps representatives will explain the Proposed Plan for the Brooksville Turret Gunnery Range Formerly Used Defense Site.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District will increase discharges from Lake Okeechobee next week to ensure adequate storage capacity is available for the remainder of the wet season.
