CRREL inducts Pangburn into Gallery of Distinguished Employees
The Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) honored its researchers, scientists and engineers during an awards ceremony in Hanover, New Hampshire, in December 2020. The final award, the Distinguished Employee Award, recognized the lifelong contributions made by Tim Pangburn, who started working for CRREL in 1978 as a civil engineering technician. He retired in 2017 as a director for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Remote Sensing (RS)/Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Center of Expertise.

When it comes to emergency response, it’s said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. For the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) and the City of Vicksburg Fire Department (VFD), the old adage is more than just a saying, it’s a blueprint for success. Until the mid-1990s, ERDC was home to its own fire department on the Waterways Experiment Station. After that, fire protection was transferred over to the City of Vicksburg.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today it will temporarily expand the Every Kid Outdoors recreation pass to include 5th grade students for the 2020-2021 academic year. This change will ensure that 5th grade students who may not have been able to make full use of the Every Kid Outdoors Annual 4th Grade Pass during the 2019-2020 academic year due to the COVID-19 pandemic will have a chance to do so during the current academic year through Aug. 31, 2021.

Army Corps of Engineers Releases Draft Feasibility Report for New York & New Jersey Harbor Deepening and Channel Improvements
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, (USACE) New York District has prepared an Integrated Feasibility Report and Environmental Assessment (IFR/EA) that evaluates a range of nonstructural and structural measures with the potential to improve navigation efficiencies within the New York and New Jersey Harbor. Currently, existing federal channels are constrained given the increasing size and number of vessels plying port waters, impacting harbor transport operations, and reducing vessel safety and cargo transportation efficiency. Trend data on vessel size growth and increasing cargo coming into the port are foundational factors in the need for the study.
