Unmanned Aircraft lift USACE emergency response operations to new heights
When the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Mobile District (Mobile), assembled an emergency response team to support recovery operations in the wake of an EF3 tornado that touched down near Albany, Ga. in January, the district decided to try a unique approach. Among the nine-member team who deployed to the field to support the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), were two members of the USACE, Jacksonville District’s (Jacksonville), Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) team.

Recently published handbook on coral reef impacts
A team of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' regulators and planners worked for several years with the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force Injury and Mitigation Working Group in the development of a new recently published handbook entitled "Handbook on Coral Reef Impacts: Avoidance, Minimization, Compensatory Mitigation, and Restoration", dated December 2016.

Barrancas Cemetery Project provides opportunity for District to honor veterans, families for their service
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District (USACE), recently completed a project at the Barrancas National Cemetery at the Naval Air Station Pensacola to construct approximately 2,500 columbarium. The project required a quick turnaround, but the USACE used some innovative techniques to ensure our Nation's Veterans and their Families received the dignified burial that their service and sacrifice demands.

USACE Mobile kicks off National Engineers Week with visit to local hospital
In an effort to promote the value of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) during National Engineers Week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, visited the University of South Alabama Children’s and Women’s Hospital here, Feb. 21. While at the hospital, engineers from the district taught the children how engineers contribute to society, hosted an interactive bridge-building contest, and handed out Mardi Gras-themed items.

Last week’s historic flash flood of Mill Creek was devastating for many of our neighbors in the Walla Walla Valley, but the City of Walla Walla was again spared from the ruinous damage of 6,000 cubic feet per second of floodwater raging through the city. As we recover from the storm and prepare for the future, we should pause to remember the vision of city leaders such as Virgil Bennington, the ingenuity of an earlier generation of U.S. Army engineers, and the dedicated professionals who operate today’s Mill Creek Project.

Vicksburg District announces launch of online inundation mapping viewer
VICKSBURG, Miss. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District announced that an online viewer for inundation mapping will launch Feb. 12. The viewer, which will be accessible through a web browser, will allow users to view forecasted inundation layers for areas affected by high water across the district’s 68,000-square-mile jurisdiction in parts of Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas.

USACE Buffalo District receives $34.405 million in FY21 President’s Budget
The President’s Budget for fiscal year 2021 released Monday includes more than $5.966 billion in discretionary funding for the Civil Works program of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, with $34.405 million set aside for Buffalo District projects.

President’s 2021 budget provides more than $181 million for district civil works projects including $123 million for New Lock at the Soo
The President’s Budget for fiscal year 2021 includes more than $5.9 billion in discretionary funding for the Civil Works program of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (see release at: Corps of Engineers, HQ Website – www.usace.army.mil) with more than $181 million for Detroit District projects around the Great Lakes. The Civil Works budget funds the operation and maintenance program, which includes the maintenance of federal shipping channels on the Great Lakes, maintenance of federal structures and the operation and maintenance of the Soo locks, in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Incorporated in the budget is funding that will be used across the district's jurisdiction in Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
