  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Extends Comment Period on the Proposed Water Supply Rule

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has extended the comment period for the notice of proposed rulemaking on the use of USACE reservoir projects for domestic, municipal, and industrial water supply that was originally published in the Federal Register on December 16, 2016. USACE has extended the comment period from August 18, 2017, to November 16, 2017. USACE will publish a notice of the extension in the Federal Register early in the week beginning August 21.

So when it became necessary to replace some enormous steel gates that are part of an Inner Harbor Navigation Canal (IHNC) lock in the New Orleans District, the challenge was monumental. But Memphis District structural engineer Marneshia Richard proved she was up to the task when she was assigned a central role in the project.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers delivered its Fiscal Year 2020 Work Plan to Congress for the Army Civil Works program Feb. 10. The plan includes more than $130 million in federal funds for investigations, construction, and the operation and maintenance of civil works projects in the Los Angeles District. Of that total, $52 million, has been allocated to final construction and closeout for the Rio de Flag flood risk management project, a cost-share effort with the city of Flagstaff, Arizona.
  • Vicksburg District provides updated forecast for region - Feb. 13

    The National Weather Service has forecasted one-to-two inches of rain across most of the Lower Mississippi River Valley over the next seven days. Over past 24 hours, parts of the Yazoo and Pearl River basins have received two-to-three inches of rain. The Mississippi River is expected to crest at Arkansas City, Arkansas, at 39.5 feet Feb. 25; Greenville, Mississippi, at 50.5 feet Feb. 26; Vicksburg, Mississippi, at 46.5 feet Feb. 28; and Natchez, Mississippi, at 54 feet Feb. 29. These projections are based on two days of forecasted rainfall and will changed based on future rainfall.

  • Corps prepares Napoleon Avenue green space for Mardi Gras parades

    Public discouraged from driving or parking on newly installed infrastructure. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District is making Mardi Gras parade preparations for the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project (SELA) green space restoration project on Napoleon Avenue (S. Claiborne Ave to Laurel). Construction began in November with areas affected by Uptown Mardi Gras parades prioritized. A new curvilinear walkway and 58 of the 115 total trees having been installed in the project area. To protect the new infrastructure, temporary barriers are being placed prior to the mid-February parades. The public can expect safety fencing and netting around the perimeter of newly planted trees for the purpose of protection against both pedestrian traffic as well as beads. As an additional consideration for fresh topsoil, sod, and concrete the Corps asks the public to avoid parking or driving vehicles on the median for any reason.
