Army Corps partners with community for first line of coastal defense
Hurricane Isaias stormed up the east coast of the United States in early August, bringing heavy rain and winds up to 85 mph to the shores of flood-prone Port Monmouth, New Jersey. Immediately, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District reached out to the community to find out how they were doing and how its flood risk management project was working.

Army Corps’ data driven to improve coastal projects
In a hotel conference room on Long Island, New York, a team of experts are processing data and information on computers. Alongside them is a large display monitor screen that’s projecting the information. "It's a beautiful thing. On the screen they are able to observe the condition of New York’s and New Jersey’s coastlines almost in real-time," said Jeffrey Cusano, Geospatial Coordinator, New York District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Army Corps contracting process continues despite Coronavirus Pandemic
For decades, the Rockaway Beach community in the Boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn in New York City has been devastated by hurricanes and Hurricane Sandy in 2012 was no exception. As a result of these storms, the beach has lost considerable sand, making the community vulnerable to flooding, economic damage, and loss of life. Since the 1970’s, the New York District has been performing sand replenishment work for Rockaway Beach. After Hurricane Sandy, the district restored 3.5 million cubic yards of sand, enough material to fill the Empire State Building two times over.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers comes to the aid of hospitals
To help New York State hospitals deal with this, Army Corps’ New York District volunteers are working 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They are locating existing buildings that can be converted into these alternate care facilities and then they are designing and constructing them.

What doesn’t always make the headlines are the good things that are occurring concerning the public’s drinking water.

Hazardous land used during Atomic Age has green future
In 1945, following the United States’ detonation of two atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, World War II ended and the Atomic Age began. Research on the uses of atomic power also started and the forming of the United States’ Atomic Energy Commission was created to foster this.

Thule Air Base, Arctic - Consistently on top of its game
Not too long ago at Thule Air Base, Greenland located in the Arctic, a change of command ceremony was taking place. Outgoing 821st Air Base Group U.S. Air Force Commander - Col. Mafwa Kuvibidila- passed the flag to her successor Col. Timothy J. Bos. Thule Air Base is the United States U.S. Air Force's northernmost base, located in the northwestern corner of Greenland, in a coastal valley 700 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 950 miles south of the North Pole.
