• USACE announces additional reopenings at recreation facilities along the Okeechobee Waterway

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District announces additional reopenings starting May 14, 2021, at Corps-managed recreation areas along the Okeechobee Waterway that were closed in March 2020 to protect against the further spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
  • Fuels Program delivers cost-saving services to Anderson AFB

    Guam may be a tropical island paradise for residents and visitors, but its warm climate and salty, humid air wreak havoc on fuel infrastructure at military installations on the island. In order to proactively combat this problem and protect vital fuel systems at Anderson Air Force Base, the U.S. Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville, and Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Energy have teamed up with the installation to provide ongoing maintenance that ultimately prevent costly large-scale corrective repairs.

    In the blink of an eye the unexpected can happen, especially on the water. Imagine heading out to go fishing at sunrise to be the first to hit that honey hole in the calm of the morning. Fog gently rising above the water, slight breeze through the air, it seems like the perfect start to the day, until something bad happens. That’s how the day started as Trevor Lindsey, construction contract representative for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District, started a 7 a.m. meeting on May 7, 2021 at Longview Lake in Kansas City, Mo. Just a beautiful day by the lake with a construction meeting outdoors, until he heard a cry for help near the lake.
  • LTG Spellman Visits Bluestone Dam

    LTG Scott Spellmon, 55th Chief of Engineers, visited Huntington District’s Bluestone Dam near Hinton, W. Va. to be updated on the Phase 5 Bluestone Safety Modification Project. As part of the update he was able to see firsthand the successes the district has had with safely integrating project operations with the construction project as well as the collaborative efforts of the Dam Safety Mandatory Center of Expertise in the design and construction. The lessons learned in this process have been shared across the entire enterprise.

  • Dewey Short Visitor Center opens for the season

    The Dewey Short Visitor Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning May 15. Masks and social distancing are required per Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and commonly touched surfaces will be routinely sanitized throughout the day by park staff.
  • Application of Incremental Sampling Methodology for Subsurface Sampling

    ABSTRACT:  Historically, researchers studying contaminated sites have used grab sampling to collect soil samples. However, this methodology can introduce error in the analysis because it does not account for the wide variations of contaminant concentrations in soil. An alternative method is the Incremental Sampling Methodology (ISM), which previous studies have shown more accurately captures the true concentration of contaminants over an area, even in heterogeneous soils. This report describes the methods and materials used with ISM to collect soil samples, specifically for the purpose of mapping subsurface contamination from site activities. The field data presented indicates that ISM is a promising methodology for collecting subsurface soil samples containing contaminants of concern, including metals and semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs), for analysis. Ultimately, this study found ISM to be useful for supplying information to assist in the decisions needed for remediation activities.
  • Wintertime Snow and Precipitation Conditions in the Willow Creek Watershed above Ririe Dam, Idaho

    ABSTRACT:  The Ririe Dam and Reservoir project is located on Willow Creek near Idaho Falls, Idaho, and is important for flood risk reduction and water supply. The current operating criteria is based on fully storing a large winter runoff event. These winter runoff events are generally from large storm events, termed atmospheric rivers, which produce substantial precipitation. In addition to the precipitation, enhanced runoff is produced due to frozen soil and snowmelt. However, the need for additional water supply by local stakeholders has prompted the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to seek to better understand the current level of flood risk reduction provided by Ririe Dam and Reservoir.  Flood risk analysis using hydrologic modeling software requires quantification of the probability for all of the hydrometeorologic inputs. Our study develops the precipitation, SWE, and frozen ground probabilities that are required for the hydrologic modeling necessary to quantify the current winter flood risk.
