In 1987 the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot became a matter of public concern when a piece of crystalline TNT was found at the Tidewater Community College, Portsmouth Campus. Extensive historical research, investigations, and testing led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to place this site on the National Priority list in 1999. SUFFOLK, Va. — Restoration efforts at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot (FNOD) remain an ongoing priority for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Community members can learn more about this Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) and hear the latest cleanup progress during the project’s quarterly Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) virtual meeting scheduled for 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. Dec. 3 via Webex.

People who would like to attend the meeting, which is open to the public and being held online because of the Covid-19 pandemic, should contact Mr. Sher Zaman by phone at (410) 320-9516 or by email at Sher.Zaman@usace.army.mil for meeting access information.

Virtual attendees should log on to the meeting at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled meeting start time in case there are technical issues.

Board members and stakeholders include residents, area businesses; local, state and federal regulators; property owners, USACE personnel and contractors, and other interested parties.

The quarterly RAB meetings serve as a public forum for the USACE’s cleanup progress at the 975-acre defense depot, located near the former Tidewater Community College Portsmouth campus. During the meetings, RAB members ask questions and provide input on all aspects of the restoration process to the interagency project team. The USEPA placed FNOD on its National Priorities List (NPL) in 1997. Two years later, the FNOD RAB was established.
