Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot
SUFFOLK, Va. -- A sign warns people of the danger at the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot. In 1987 the Former Nansemond Ordnance Depot became a matter of public concern when a piece of crystalline TNT was found at the Tidewater Community College, Portsmouth Campus. Extensive historical research, investigations, and testing led the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to place this site on the National Priority list in 1999. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has managed the clean-up project on this site since. (U.S. Army photo/Patrick Bloodgood)
