Zebra Mussels found in Tuttle Creek Reservoir

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism has confirmed the presence of zebra mussels in Tuttle Creek Reservoir. The reservoir encompasses areas in Riley, Pottawatomie and Marshall counties. An alert fisherman found a rock with one adult zebra mussel attached and reported it to KDWPT staff at the Tuttle Creek State Park office. A subsequent search by KDWPT fisheries staff verified the presence of additional zebra mussels. Twenty-nine Kansas lakes are now confirmed to have zebra mussels. Other reservoirs in northeast Kansas with zebra mussel infestations include Milford, Clinton, Perry, Pomona, John Redmond and Melvern lakes.

Officials rededicate Milford Lake Dam on 50th anniversary

Milford, Kan. — Local, state and federal officials gathered Saturday to rededicate the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Milford Lake Dam fifty years after its original dedication at East Rolling Hills Park. The ceremony commemorated the 50th anniversary of Milford filling to capacity.

Corps prepares for dam inspection at Perry Lake

PERRY, Kan. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Perry Lake will dewater the water control structures to perform a safety inspection beginning Aug. 17 through Sept. 1. The Outlet Park on both sides of the spillway will be closed to the public throughout this inspection. Dam safety inspections are a vital part of the Corps mission. Formal engineering inspections are performed every five years.

Warrior Deer Hunt scheduled at Perry Lake

PERRY, Kan.— The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Perry Lake will host the third annual Warrior deer hunt for Soldiers in Fort Riley’s Warrior Transition Battalion Dec. 9 through 11. During this event all ATV Trails, Rock Creek, Perry, Slough Creek and Longview parks will be temporarily closed for public use.

Third highest inflows ever recorded lift Wilson Lake out of five-year slump

The third highest inflows ever recorded at a river gage upstream of Wilson Lake raised the water level by almost seven feet, helping the lake replenish from the effects of a five-year drought. Heavy rains from a Sept. 2 storm produced inflows at the Saline River gage north of Russell, Kan. of nearly 23,000 cubic feet per second. This brought the lake to 1.28 feet above the normal water level, and one foot above the seasonal water level management plan target.

Public health warning for Milford Lake

Junction City, Kan.— Milford Lake is under a lake-wide warning based on cyanobacteria/toxin results from June 27 conducted by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Blue-green algae are actually types of bacteria known as Cyanobacteria. When certain conditions are present, such as high nutrient and light levels, these toxic producing organisms can reproduce rapidly producing a harmful algae bloom. KDHE, in cooperation with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism and other lake managers where appropriate, respond by informing the public of these conditions. Based upon sampling results and established health risk levels, the warning for all three zones of Milford Lake are in effect.
