  • Litigation stay agreement increasing Columbia River spill, begins

    After an agreement to stay the Columbia River Basin litigation for up to 10 years, federal water managers will begin spilling more water over basin dams this spring than in past years. In the agreement, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has committed to spill more water over spillways instead of through turbines during its annual “spring spill” operations at dams on the lower Snake and Columbia rivers as well as expanding spill in the fall and early spring.

Water managers are targeting a typical annual refill of the lake to elevation 22 feet this spring, to help meet increased summer water use and provide water necessary for fish passage, navigation and salinity control.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District delivered a record amount of water from Water Conservation Area (WCA) 3-A to Everglades National Park (ENP) in the past year. Surpassing expectations, the USACE successfully delivered over 1.4 million acre-feet of water, marking the third-highest volume since 2012, during a non-hurricane year.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District will be hosting a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) meeting for the Western Everglades Restoration Project (WERP) Draft Project Implementation Report and Environmental Impact Statement (PIR/EIS) on Jan.17, 2024 from 5:00-8:00 pm at the University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) station, Southwest Florida Research & Education Center, 2685 State Road 29 North in Immokalee, FL. The virtual only meeting will be January 18, 2024 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm. The link and call-in information is listed below. The USACE / South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) team will provide an overview of the project and contents of the Draft Report.
