    USACE Galveston District awards $6.9 million contract to dredge Brownsville Ship Channel, Port Isabel Channel

    GALVESTON, Texas (July 2, 2015) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District awarded a contract in the amount of $6,956,000 to RLB Contracting Inc., for maintenance dredging of the Brownsville Ship Channel and Turning Basin and Port Isabel Channel and Turning Basin in Cameron County, Texas.

    NASHVILLE, TENN., (July 2, 2015) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District supports marina operators and owners who are voluntarily striving to protect the water resources of the Cumberland River Basin by going “clean and green” such as Sunset Marina in Monroe, Tenn. The Corps, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Cumberland River Compact, and Sunset Marina celebrated June 22, 2015 as the marina received their recertification and a new flag to designate them as a “Clean Marina.”

    NR 15-023: Elevated lake levels expected at Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (July 2, 2015) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District expects elevated lake levels over the Independence Day weekend at Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. This anticipated rise in lake levels is the result of heavy rainfall in the forecast and the ongoing flooding situation on the lower Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.

    Remember the drought? What a difference a year can make. I arrived at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Southwestern Division in Dallas about a year ago, and most of the region was in some stage of drought. News coverage highlighted striking images of thirsty lakes, shorelines receding with lakebeds cracked and dry, and low Corps reservoir levels. Communities chafed under lawn watering restrictions.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District encourages you to do your part to reduce this cause by wearing a life jacket while in or around water. Statistics show that 89 percent of those who drown at Corps managed lakes and rivers may have survived if they had worn a life jacket. With this in mind here are useful safety tips to help you have a safe and enjoyable Independence Day weekend.
