• Formula for winter reservoir management more complicated than it appears

    With the rainy season upon us, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District is buckling down to ensure the Central Valley’s reservoirs are ready for whatever the season may or may not bring. While water management is a year-round responsibility, the winter months bring with them especially tough challenges for the Corps in maintaining the delicate balance of flood risk reduction and water supply.

    The Corps helped City Administrator Rashad Young, Deputy Mayor Courtney Snowden, and Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE) Director Tommy Wells launch Climate Ready DC, the District’s new plan to adapt to a changing climate that could result in more dangerous heatwaves, severe storms, and flooding.
  • New online maps show storm-based flood potential along Potomac, Anacostia rivers

    New digital maps allow government leaders, emergency managers, and the public to view potential flood impacts during high-water events along the Potomac and Anacostia rivers throughout the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia and nearby communities. The maps are now live on the National Weather Service’s web site.

    SEATTLE – A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers team rescued a 6-foot white sturgeon during the annual maintenance pump out at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks November 10.
  • Corps of Engineers to host public meetings on dredging plans, land acquisition

    ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is hosting public meetings in Cochrane, Wisconsin, and Wabasha, Minnesota, Dec. 14 and 15 to discuss its planning efforts to manage Mississippi River dredged material between the Chippewa River and Lock and Dam 5, located near Minnesota City, Minnesota.

    LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - A concrete footing of the Broadway Bridge in Little Rock is scheduled to be demolished at 4 p.m. today.
  • Future work planned to repair Tuttle Creek Dam stilling basin, sinkhole

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District recently announced plans to repair the Tuttle Creek Lake stilling basin, including the area damaged by the formation of a sinkhole in 2015. The project is in the final design stage but is not yet scheduled or funded. Once construction is scheduled, those dates will be announced and it is anticipated to take 18-24 months to complete the project.

    Huntington District participated in the Huntington East Middle School Career Day with nearly 600 students in grades 6-8 at the Huntington East Middle School Career Day.
  • Congressman Wenstrup visits Meldahl

    Colonel Secrist met with Congressman Brad Wenstrup at the Meldahl Lock and Dam for a project tour. He briefed the congressman on how integration with the hydropower plant works, the USACE navigation mission, the completed work of the auxiliary lock chamber gates, as well as an explanation of the planned main lock chamber gate replacement in the summer of 2017.

    The Dam Safety Modification Mandatory Center of Expertise (DSMMCX) senior geotechnical engineers Seth Lyle and Adam Kays travelled to The Engineer Research and Development Center's (ERDC) Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory to observe and participate in backwards erosion piping testing.
