  • Corps to Host Several Public Open House Events for Des Moines River Water Control Plan Update

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District is hosting four public open house events to seek input on updating the Des Moines River Regulation Manual which includes the Water Control Manual for Saylorville Lake and Red Rock Lake. Proposed updates to the Manual will be discussed during the meetings and District staff will be on hand to answer questions and discuss comments, questions and/or concerns regarding the Water Control Plan update.

  • 17-008 Corps seeks public input on proposed Section 408 for ODOT bridge-replacement project

    MILTON-FREEWATER, Oregon – The Walla Walla District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) seeks scoping comments from the public regarding the Corps’ proposal to grant permission pursuant to 33 United States Code Section 408 (Section 408) for potential alteration to a Corps-constructed river improvement (public work). The Corps plans to grant Section 408 permission to the Milton-Freewater Water Control District to allow the modification of the Walla Walla River Flood Control Project (levee system) by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) to replace the structurally deficient Birch Creek Road Bridge.

  • 17-007 Bruces Eddy road temporarily closed for safety; chains recommended on View Point Road

    AHSAHKA, Idaho – Vehicles access to Bruces Eddy recreation area, located on the shoreline of Dworshak Reservoir in Ahsahka, Idaho, is temporarily closed because of extremely hazardous road conditions, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) officials at the Dworshak Natural Resources Management Office announced, today. Overnight freezing rain creating slick road conditions, prompted park rangers to close ‘A’ Road. They also strongly recommend vehicles be equipped with chains on their tires when traveling on the steep-sloped View Point Road, leading to and from the Dworshak Visitor Center and Big Eddy marina, boat ramp and day-use area.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is a great example of a capability-rich organization that provides a wide variety of services to other non-Department of Defense federal agencies, international organizations, foreign governments, tribal nations, and state and local governments. Through the Interagency and International Services (IIS) program, the Corps of Engineers offers assistance with managing natural resources such as land and water, environmental restoration and management, engineering and construction, relief and recovery, research and development, along with a host of other technical services (i.e., technical editing).

  • Project engineer supports U.S. military, diplomatic missions in Estonia

    Chris Bailey grew up in Alabama and saw snow so infrequently he thought it was a Christmas miracle. As a boy, his hometown was dusted by flurries less than a handful of times. Now serving with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District in Estonia, snow is a daily norm for Bailey — at least in winter months when average temperatures hover around freezing in the Baltic country. As a one-man project office, Bailey is the engineer responsible for managing more than 20 European Reassurance Initiative infrastructure and construction projects for U.S. Army and Air Force partners.

Since the Army Corps of Engineers employs many professionals in science and engineering, she thought it would be a perfect fit.
