    Corps announces changes to navigation on lower Kissimmee River basin

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Jacksonville District is notifying Kissimmee River boaters of navigational restrictions along approximately ten miles of the river in the lower river basin. The Corps continues backfilling the channelized Kissimmee River segments to allow flows through the historic river channel and restore its floodplain and habitat.

    Getting to Know the Omaha District: Chuck McWilliams

    With more 700,000 square miles within its area of responsibility, the Omaha District’s 1,200+ employees bring very unique skillsets and experiences to the District’s broad mission set. Positions within the District range from a variety of disciplines, from engineers to real estate experts, to contract specialists, meteorologists, photographers—just to name a few. District employee ages range from low 20s into the mid-to-late 70s. Some of our teammates have experienced some of the best and worse the Midwest has to offer, while others were only toddlers when 9-11 happened. Some have only been with the District for a few weeks, while others have dedicated more than 40 years of their life to the District. All have a story and through this forum, we will begin highlighting some of them so the reader better understand the broad range of diversity we have within the Omaha District.

    CORPS CAUTIONS THAT ARKANSAS RIVER STILL TOO HIGH FOR RECREATION

    The Army Corps of Engineers continues to urge everyone to stay off the Arkansas River. Even though flood waters are receding, flows are still high and can pose a severe risk. Flows on the river are currently around 160,000 cubic feet per second and the Corps issues small craft advisories at 70,000 cubic feet per second.

    High Water at Lake Shelbyville

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville is reporting high water conditions at the lake. The pool elevation has risen to 6.39 feet above normal summer pool (599.7 feet referenced to the National Geodetic Vertical Datum (NGVD). The level as of 7 a.m. on Thursday, June 20 was 606.09 feet NVGD and rising.  The discharge rate was 750 cubic feet per second (cfs).

    USACE Galveston District awards $20.9 million dredging project with beach renourishment component

    GALVESTON, Texas (June 20, 2019) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District awarded a $20.9 million contract Tuesday to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company, LLC for maintenance dredging of the Galveston Entrance, Outer, and Inner Bar Channels and Houston Ship Channel Bolivar Roads to Redfish Reef, Texas.

    Vicksburg District opens Steele Bayou Control Structure gates, anticipates the opening of the Little Sunflower Control Structure

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District opened the gates of the Steele Bayou Control Structure June 20 at 9 a.m. The Steele Bayou Control Structure, which was built in 1969, combined with the Mississippi River and Yazoo Backwater levees, prevents the Yazoo and Mississippi rivers from backing up and further flooding the Delta. The structure’s gates have been closed since June 7 preventing backflow.
