  • Status of Dove Fields at Lake Shelbyville

    For Immediate Release: 17 July 2019 Release No.19-27 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Status of Dove Fields Lake Shelbyville - Due to the wet spring, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was unable to plant sunflowers in time to hold its annual dove hunt. Approximately 10 acres of sunflowers were planted at South Sand Creek Dove Field almost a month later than usual and the flowers will not be mature by the September 1st opener. The Whitley Creek dove field was still too wet to plant when Sand Creek was planted, and it was decided to forego the planting of that field. Once the flowers at South Sand Creek are mature, strips will be mowed in them and blinds will be staked as usual. However, the blinds will be on a first come, first served basis and no managed hunt will be held.

  • Join the Corps of Engineers, National Park Service for an open house at Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is partnering with the National Park Service and Mississippi Park Connection to host an open house at the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam, in Minneapolis, on Saturday, July 27, to coincide with the city’s Aquatennial festival.

  • Bluestone Dam Edges Closer to Completion

    The makeover at Bluestone Dam has been a slow process – but the final part of the process is now underway. Located on the scenic New River in southern West Virginia, the dam is a massive concrete structure built in the 1940s to reduce flooding across the state. It’s enjoyed a long history of success, preventing more than $6 billion in flood damages during its lifetime - but the ability of the dam to withstand a major storm was called into question in the late 1990s.

    Little Rock, Ark. – Recent heavy rains produced from the remnants of Hurricane Barry is filling the flood pool at Dierks Lake requiring the Army Corps of Engineers to begin releases from the lake between 10 p.m. and midnight, July 16.
  • Heuser retires from military service; heads to Army War College as a civilian

    Army Reserve Col. Todd M. Heuser was retired July 13, 2019, at the George Washington Hotel in downtown Winchester, Virginia, after a 30-year military career. And, in an unusual twist, he was also “farewelled” from his civilian position as the Transatlantic Division’s Chief of Plans as he departs the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to attend the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Usually, military colonels attend the Army’s senior service school while still in uniform; however, it is open to members of the civil service ranks. Heuser will be a part of the Class of 2020, where he will earn a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies following 10-months of rigorous study at the college.
