  • Mile Point construction starts in January; boaters beware

    Starting in January 2016 and continuing through November 2016, Manson Construction Co. will construct the Mile Point Training Wall Reconfiguration Project for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This project will reroute the navigable waters in the Chicopit Bay and the Inter-Coastal Waterway system.

  • Corps hosts Dade County shore protection public meetings in Miami Aug. 25, Hobe Sound Aug. 26 and Fort Pierce Sept. 2

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, invites the public to provide comments on the draft Environmental Assessment and draft Finding of No Significant Impact for the Identification of Alternative Sand Sources for the Remaining Period of Federal Participation, Dade County Beach Erosion Control and Hurricane Protection Project. The Corps will host public meetings in Miami Aug. 25, Hobe Sound Aug. 26 and Fort Pierce Sept. 2.

  • USACE recognizes Jax District Portugués Dam Project Team

    The Jacksonville District’s Portugués Dam Project Team has won the USACE Dam Safety Team Award of Excellence for 2015. The team brought together experts from across the Corps, as well from the private sector, to design, review and build the thick-arch roller-compacted-concrete dam.

    Three engineers with the Jacksonville district, Jose Bilbao, Tony Ledford and Matthew Tibbs, recently achieved a major professional milestone, when they became licensed professional engineers.

  • Army Corps of Engineers announces park closure

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District announces the closure of Helen Cooper Floyd Park during the construction of the Mile Point Navigation Project. Located near Mayport, the park will contain construction activity and also be used as an equipment staging area throughout project operations. The closure is effective Apr. 1 through construction completion in the winter of 2016.

  • Fight invasive species at First Coast Air Potato Roundup February 28

    First coast residents can fight invasive species by participating in the 9th Annual First Coast Air Potato Roundup Saturday, Feb. 28 from 9 a.m. – noon in Jacksonville, Florida and the surrounding area. The Invasive Species Management Branch of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District and partners at the First Coast Invasive Working Group host the event to celebrate National Invasive Species Awareness Week.

  • Jacksonville District commander signs memorandum of understanding with local university

    On Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2014, the Jacksonville District signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of North Florida (UNF), designed to be a framework outlining cooperative educational collaborations between UNF and the district in STEM subject areas for purposes of developing student scientists and engineers.

  • Tussock removal

    A half-acre tussock was blown by the wind, and completely blocked the navigation channel of Rim Canal Route 2 of the Okeechobee Waterway, on the south side of Lake Okeechobee. The Okeechobee Waterway is a navigable waterway that cuts across the state, from the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The tug boat Leitner, with Capt. Graham Thompson at the helm, pushed a barge-mounted crane with a crew of three into position. The team successfully broke up and removed the tussock, restoring navigation on the Okeechobee Waterway.

  • Mile Point Industry Day information educates contractors

    Due to the complexity and challenges of the Mile Point Reconfiguration project, project manager Jason Harrah knew it was important to engage and inform the industry about the project early on. An industry day was held in Jacksonville in November, to provide an opportunity for contractor representatives to learn about the details and requirements for the project.
