  • Chittenden Locks large chamber closed August 24

    The large lock at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard is closed to all marine traffic today due to an unexpected hydraulics problem. Mechanics are working on the problem, but don’t yet have an estimated time when the large lock can be put back in service. The small lock will be available for vessels throughout the large lock closure. Mariners will be notified when the large lock returns to service.

  • Corps urges boaters to use caution on Okeechobee Waterway

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District is advising boaters on Lake Okeechobee that the low water level is now creating hazardous navigation conditions. The Corps issued a Notice to Navigation on Thursday (May 25), advising commercial and recreational vessels to use extreme caution while traveling Okeechobee Waterway Routes 1 and 2 between Port Mayaca and Clewiston. Route 1 goes directly across the lake, while Route 2 runs along the southern edge of the lake through Pahokee, Belle Glade, South Bay, and Clewiston.

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 14, 2017) – Excited youngsters eagerly donned life jackets today for the chance to learn about navigation and water safety on board several Corps of Engineers boats docked on the Cumberland River at Music City’s Riverfront. Throughout the day they participated in lots of fun activities, learned about Nashville District operations and missions, and their parents did a lot of “show and tell” on “Take Your Kids to Work Day.”

    CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Feb. 28, 2017) – To gain a better perspective of the nation’s aging infrastructure on America’s waterways the senior official performing duties of secretary of the Army for Civil Works toured Chickamauga Lock today to realize the challenges of keeping a deteriorated lock open while racing against time to construct a replacement lock.

  • Hiram M. Chittenden Locks large chamber to close January 17 from 8 a.m. to noon

    The large lock will close to all marine traffic for pump plant-related work from 8 a.m. to noon January 17. The small lock will still be available for vessels less than 120 feet in length and 26 feet in width during this period.
