Black Butte Lake is ready for guests

Have no reservations -- there’s plenty of gorgeous blue water, camping and updated facilities ready for use at Black Butte Lake. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District recreation park near Orland now has 85,000 acre-feet of water -- seven times as much as the seasonal low from back when photos of the dry, cracked lakebed came to symbolize California’s drought.

Two more giant spillway gates set to arrive at Folsom Dam

Two more giant gates for the new auxiliary spillway at Folsom Dam are scheduled to complete the 600-mile journey from Vancouver, Wash., to Folsom this month with the first one scheduled to arrive early in the morning Saturday, May 10. A second delivery this month is scheduled to arrive early in the morning on May 17.

NR 14-010: Corps invites the public to tour Old Hickory Lock and Dam

OLD HICKORY, Tenn. (May 8, 2014) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Old Hickory Lake is now accepting registration applications for the Saturday, May 17, lock and dam tour beginning at 11 a.m. at the Old Hickory Lock parking area. Free to the public and approximately 75 minutes in length, the guided tour will give registered participants an opportunity to not only view the facilities, but also learn about the lake’s history and important role the navigational lock and powerhouse facilities play with the cities and towns along the Cumberland River.

Corps participates in Life Jacket Trade-in Day, May 17

In celebration of Safe Boating Week, members of the public are invited to trade in their old life jackets for a fresh, clean new one May 17 at any U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District park. Old jackets will be exchanged for a new U.S. Coast Guard-approved type III life jacket, courtesy of the California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways.

NR 14-009: Laurel River Lake restrooms renovated, ready for recreation season

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 6, 2014) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District has renovated the restrooms nearby the beach at Laurel River Dam in London, Ky., in time for the 2014 recreation season.

NR 14-008: Corps offers tours of Dale Hollow Lake Power Plant

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 6, 2014) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is offering the public free guided tours of the Dale Hollow Power Plant in Celina, Tenn. These are the first tours of the power plant since the Corps restricted visitations after 9-11. Not all portions of the dam will be accessible to the public due to safety concerns.

Water Managers Cooperate to Create Beneficial River Flows

Flows on the Rio Grande from Albuquerque to Elephant Butte Reservoir will increase this week in a coordinated effort aimed at triggering a spawn of the endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow. This pioneering effort by federal and non-federal water managers will create conditions that haven’t naturally occurred over the last four years due to drought.

Chicago Park District and Corps host public meeting for Jackson Park project

The CPD in cooperation with the Corps will host a community meeting to discuss the Jackson Park Great Lakes Fishery and Ecosystem Restoration Project, Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at 6 p.m. at the Jackson Park Fieldhouse: 6401 S. Stony Island Ave, Chicago, IL. 60637. The Corps posted for a 30-day public review a draft study report and Environmental Assessment for the project April 11, 2014. The project site consists of approximately 155 acres of natural land along the western coast of Lake Michigan between 56th and 67th streets.

New Headquarters Tribal Liaison Visits District and Local Tribal Leaders

Recently the District was honored to have the new Corps’ Senior Tribal Liaison, Lisa Morales, visit. While in the District, Morales and Dr. Ron Kneebone, Albuquerque District tribal liaison, met with representatives from five Native American Tribes within the District’s Area of Responsibility.

Corps to Asphalt the Road and Boat Launching Ramp at Norfork Lake’s Udall Park

MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. – The Army Corps of Engineers’ Mountain Home Project Office is advising the public that road crews will be laying new asphalt in Udall Park Monday, May 5 through Friday, May 16. While work is underway roads and the boat launching ramp, access will be periodically interrupted.
