  • ERDC signs Education Partnership Agreement with Hinds Community College for R&D Shop program

    The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) and Hinds Community College recently signed an Education Partnership Agreement (EPA) to implement the “Partnership in Education” program, an initiative that encourages study in STEM and professional areas of interest such as unmanned aerial vehicles and those enhancing the engineering, technological and scientific areas at ERDC’s seven laboratories.

    On November 14, 2024, cadets from the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering (CME) at the United States Military Academy visited the USACE Great Lakes and Ohio River Division (LRD) Headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio. They attended informational sessions led by LRD leadership and staff, received mentorship from LRD Division Commander Maj. Gen. Mark C. Quander, reviewed LRD missions and projects, and gained critical advice and insights for their own senior capstone projects.

  • USACE Buffalo District Celebrates Native American Heritage with AISES

    BUFFALO, N.Y. — In honor of Native American Heritage Month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District welcomed Alicia Mitchell, member of the Cherokee Nation and Director of Tribal and Government Relations at AISES - Advancing Indigenous People in STEM, for a presentation highlighting the organization’s mission and partnership with USACE. This year’s theme for Native American Heritage Month, “Affirming Native Voices: Visibility-Leadership-Service,” underscores the event’s significance. The theme reflects the Corps of Engineers’ commitment to recognizing the diverse backgrounds and experiences that strengthen its workforce and the communities it serves.

  • Connecting the dots: Annual event educates girls about STEM opportunities

    The U.S. has a long history of promoting science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, in public education going back to the late 19th century. While there have been major pushes for STEM in education since then, during the space race of the 1950s for example, it wasn’t until the early 2000s that STEM became part of the American vernacular. The early 2000s saw legislation boosting STEM educators, jobs and programs, alongside efforts to encourage more women and girls to pursue STEM and STEM-related occupations. According to the Society of Women Engineers, in 1980, women made up just 5% of architecture and engineering occupations, 20% of chemistry occupations, 26% of computer and mathematical occupations and 33% of biological scientists. In 2023, those numbers were 16.7%, 26.9%, 36% and 55%, respectively. While women have come a long way in STEM fields over the last few decades, there is still room for improvement.

  • ERDC earns high scores on annual student survey

    This summer, ERDC hosted a record-breaking number of interns at its seven laboratories—544 of them to be exact. Ninety-five percent of the students, interns, and fellows who worked at the organization during Fiscal Year 2024 agreed in an annual student survey that ERDC’s work activities provided a positive learning experience.
