USACE Chicago District completes record-breaking fiscal year with $241M program

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Chicago District closed out fiscal year 2020 with a record-breaking $241M program. A significant contribution to the spike in execution was $137M from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the district’s support to the COVID-19 pandemic response.

Corps of Engineers completes Fort Sheridan Great Lakes Fishery, Ecosystem Restoration project with USEPA funds

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Chicago District (USACE) has completed construction for the final phase of the Fort Sheridan Great Lakes Fishery and Ecosystem Restoration (GLFER) project, located at Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve in unincorporated Lake County, Illinois. The majority of the $9.1 million federal share was funded with Great Lakes Restoration and Initiative (GLRI) funds received from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. USACE is one of 16 federal agencies that uses GLRI funds to plan, design, and construct long-lasting restoration projects in cooperation with nonfederal partners.

National Recreation and Parks Month - USACE Chicago District highlights its three recreation areas

This month we celebrate National Recreation and Parks Month. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is one of the nation's leading federal providers of outdoor recreation with more than 400 lake and river projects in 43 states. Visitors of all ages can enjoy traditional activities like hiking, boating, fishing, camping, and hunting. Ninety percent of the Corps’ recreation areas are located within 50 miles of a major metropolitan center.

Chicago Harbor Lock – busiest in nation last year for lockages, vessels

The Chicago Harbor Lock, located in Chicago and adjacent to Navy Pier, separates the waters of Lake Michigan from the Chicago River. It is one of two entrances from the Great Lakes to the Illinois Waterway System. And, according to its Lockmaster Selwyn Tyrone Valley, last year it hit a milestone.
