    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District completes substantial repair of Vermilion Harbor east pier

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District and its contractor, Illinois-based Kovilic Construction Company Inc., completed substantial repairs of the Vermilion Harbor east pier on October 26, 2021. Construction on the $2.2 million project began in June and encompassed 70 feet of the most degraded section of the pier. Included in the construction were repairs to a mass concrete structure immediately adjacent to the existing timber crib, placement of new armor stone, reuse of existing cover stones, and installation of curved precast concrete blocks.

    Kansas City District USACE supports flood risk reduction study for Valley Creek, Alabama – now signed by the Chief of Engineers

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District, collaborated on a feasibility study on flood risk reduction for a creek in Alabama with the Mobile District and local leaders over the last three years. The Chief of Engineers, Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, signed the Chief’s Report on Friday, Oct. 29, 2021 referring the action to Congress where the project could be taken up in the next Water Resources Development Act. If approved, separate appropriations legislation would have to be passed to fund the construction of the project to benefit communities extending from Birmingham to Bessemer, Alabama via the Valley Creek Flood Risk Management Project.

    NR 21-35: Army Corps of Engineers waives day use fees at recreation areas in observance of Veterans Day

    WASHINGTON – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today that it will waive day use fees at its more than 2,850 USACE-operated recreation areas nationwide in observance of Veterans Day, Nov. 11. This includes areas the Nashville District operates within the Cumberland River Basin.

    Jacksonville District announces operations schedule for start of Intracoastal Waterway, Palm Valley North Reaches, dredging

    The Jacksonville District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, announced that dredging operations on the Intracoastal Waterway (IWW) Palm Valley North Reaches will be undertaken in two shifts per day, seven days per week when they begin work sometime in the next two months.
