Mapping and Localization Within a Mock Sewer System

Abstract: Herein, we explored a robot’s ability to localize and map, both in simulation and on a physical robot, within a mock sewer system. Mapping and localization techniques were first developed and tested in simulation and were then transitioned to the actual robot for additional physical testing. Several odometry and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) techniques, including gmapping, SLAM toolbox, elevation mapping, and RTABMap, were evaluated for this particular environment. The results of the odometry and the various SLAM approaches are discussed in detail.

Federal water managers announce public information sessions about post-September 2024 Columbia River Treaty operations

How the United States uses reservoir space in Canada changes on September 16, 2024, from the high degree of structure and control of flows coming across the border from Canada experienced over the last 60 years under the Columbia River Treaty, to an operation that increases the uncertainty of those flows. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) will hold four virtual public information sessions in September and October to begin informing the public about the potential changes.

Navigation Notice: SWL 23-55 McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System

Due to shoaling, mariners are advised that until further notice, both upbound and downbound tows should favor the short wall in the downstream approach at Montgomery Point Lock and Dam (NM 0.5). Also, a 70-ft width restriction is in place to reduce the risk of grounding in the area. Crews are being dispatched to perform digging and clamming operations in the reach. A subsequent navigation notice will be issued once the shoaling has been cleared and the 70-ft width restriction has been lifted.
