• Corps of Engineers issues permit for Southern Rail Extension

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today issued a Department of the Army permit to the Alaska Railroad Corporation (ARRC) to construct the Port MacKenzie Rail Extension project. The permit, issued under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, authorizes the railroad to permanently fill 95.8 acres of wetlands to construct a new rail line approximately 35.8 miles long. The new rail line will connect into the existing main rail line just south of Houston, Alaska, and end at Port MacKenzie. The existing main line runs from Seward through Anchorage to Fairbanks.

  • Drought conditions continue to impact Lake Lanier

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Lake Lanier Shoreline Management Section has been working under a modified schedule since May 20, 2012, in an effort to provide support for public safety initiatives at the project. Given that the “recreation season” has ended, normal shoreline management work schedules will resume on Monday, September 10, 2012.
  • District contributes to "Feds Feed Families"

    The Rock Island District participated in the 2012 "Feds Feed Families" food drive in August. The Rock Island Arsenal and Soldiers from the U.S. Army Sustainment Command distributed collection cans, picked-up the donations and in total delivered more than 3,000 pounds of food to the River Bend Foodbank in Moline, Ill.

    During meetings held to announce the results of Draft Surplus Water reports for five of the six Missouri River Mainstem Reservoirs Aug. 20 to Aug. 29, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, concurrently began the scoping process for the reallocation study for the Missouri River Mainstem System.

    After 20 years, the U.S. Navy had taught Pam Reid-Szalanski a certain way to manage people. “In the military, as a manager, you direct your people to do something and it’s understood that it’s an order – it must be done,” she said. “Time for questions is later.” Reid-Szalanski is one of four who recently graduated from the Norfolk District’s Leadership Development Program – a curriculum she credits with perfecting the art of civilian management.
