    MOBILE, Ala. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has scheduled a ceremony Thursday, March 21 10:00 a.m. EST at the Walter F. George Powerhouse to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the locks and dams at Walter F. George and George W. Andrews. The WFG Lake was named after a former U.S. Senator from Georgia and GWA Lake was named after a former U.S. Representative from Alabama.

    MOBILE, Ala. – The US. Army Corps of Engineers at West Point Lake and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 81 will conduct a personal watercraft and boating safety course scheduled at the West Point Project Management Office in West Point, Ga. March 19 – 21 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. EST.

    Members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District’s Arizona/Nevada Area Office joined with exhibitors and vendors at the annual Tres Rios Nature and Earth Festival held Mar. 9 and 10 at the Baseline and Meridian Wildlife Area near the Phoenix International Raceway. District team members talked with members of the public about projects across the Valley, the state and the LA District, which covers Southern California, all of Arizona, and portions of Nevada and Utah. One of the major local projects the team discussed was the Tres Rios Environmental Restoration Project.

  • Lake Shelbyville Fish Habitat Work Day Was A Success

    Lake Shelbyville – A record number, 157 volunteers, joined to help the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources place donated Christmas trees and artificial fish habitat structures into Lake Shelbyville on March 9, 2013. Every year donated Christmas trees are bundled together in small groups and submerged in the lake at select locations to enhance fish habitat in the lake. Due to the dwindling number of donated Christmas trees, 150 artificial fish habitat structures were purchased. They were then assembled on site by volunteers and placed in the lake. Both the tree and artificial structures provide fish with breeding areas, escape cover and food source from the growth of algae and plankton on or near the structures. The structures are not only invaluable to the fish but to anglers as well.

    YAPHANK, N.Y. – Removal of Hurricane Sandy debris on Fire Island began March 2 and is scheduled to be complete by the end of March. In an effort to meet the March 31 completion goal, the debris removal contractors will begin work around the clock March 15. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is overseeing the debris removal project as part of the federal government's Sandy recovery efforts.

    The navigation locks at Bonneville, The Dalles and John Day will re-open at 5 p.m. today, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced. The Corps closes its navigation locks on the Columbia and Snake rivers each March to conduct annual inspections, repairs and maintenance.
