The Corps places most of its concrete under water at locks, dams and river related structures; therefore, the concrete has to be designed to last.
  • Going Green: Rare mushrooms discovered after prescribed burn

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers botanists discovered a new site for the rare Pruitt's Amanita mushroom at Fern Ridge Reservoir west of Eugene, Ore., recently. Soils and botany student intern Leanna Van Slambrook spotted some white mushrooms popping out of the charred, soggy ground on the southwest side of the reservoir after a prescribed burn and remembered that a rare Amanita had been found after a burn a few years back.

  • Summit Bridge to close weekend of April 19

    Philadelphia, Pa. – The Summit Bridge will be closed to traffic from Friday, April 19, at 10 p.m., to Monday, April 22, at 5 a.m., the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia District announced today. The closure is necessary to facilitate steel repairs and to accommodate the heavy machinery necessary to paint higher sections of the bridge and to replace several concrete barriers, called parapets, that separate traffic and provide protection at the edge of the outer lanes.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District awarded a $775,000 contract Mar. 1, 2013, for design services to the joint venture of URS Group Inc., Kleinfelder West Inc. and Geomatrix Consultants Inc. for the relocation of U.S. Highway 178 and Lake Isabella Boulevard at Isabella Lake as part of the Isabella Lake Dam Safety Modification Project.
