    Corps of Engineers dams capturing storm runoff, reservoirs filling

    Large federal reservoirs are seeing the effects of recent back-to-back heavy rainstorms drenching the Willamette Valley, prompting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to increase water releases from most of its dams this weekend in order to preserve storage space for future storms.

    While conducting a routine site visit at the S-356 pump station on Tamiami Trail, Zoeller met an 11-foot long Burmese python face-to-face. Fortunately for her, Ruben Ramirez, founder of Florida Python Hunters, had just captured the invasive reptile nearby. Since it takes two hands to handle such a large, muscular, powerful snake, taking a “selfie” was out of the question. So Ramirez enlisted Zoeller’s help. Zoeller, who was on site as part of her normal operations, maintenance, repair, replacement and rehabilitation duties, was happy that she had not run into the large reptile on her own.

    Seventy students from two area schools gathered at the District’s main office to learn more about the importance of STEM and some of the various ways these subjects are essential in what the Corps of Engineers does on a daily basis.

    Drought leads to low lake level at Texoma; boaters should be vigilant

    The Tulsa District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers advises visitors to Lake Texoma of the impact an extreme drought is having on the lake level. The current water level is several feet below normal and the Corps urges boaters to be vigilant when on the water. There is water for boating and other activities.

    USACE Galveston District to begin maintenance work at Colorado River Locks; advises of temporary lock closures

    MATAGORDA, Texas (Feb. 14, 2014) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District will begin maintenance repair work at the Colorado River Locks in Matagorda, Texas, to include installation of an impressed current cathodic protection system on the eight sector gates to extend the life of the navigation structures.

    Army Corps to temporarily close road at Francis E. Walter Dam due to weather

    Philadelphia, Pa. (Feb 14, 2014) – The U.S. Army Corps Engineers’ Philadelphia District will close the Francis E. Walter Dam road (between Bear Creek Road and Route 940) due to poor visibility and snow cover through the holiday weekend. Staff will continue to work to clear snow.

    Honolulu District Showcases Capabilities for 2014 Engineers Week Activities

    More than 300 engineers and friends of the 17 organizations within the Hawaii Council of Engineering Societies plus invited local VIPs and dignitaries and engineers from the Honolulu District are expected to gather at the Hale Koa's Banyan Tree Showroom Feb. 18 for a luncheon to kick off Engineers Week 2014, which runs Feb. 16 to 22.
