  • Corps consults with City of Cincinnati on repair process after flood event

    The Corps of Engineers Louisville District is working with the City of Cincinnati to assess damages to a short section of the Duck Creek Levee System. The Duck Creek project was damaged by heavy rains from a storm that passed through the area on Aug. 28. Construction of the project was complete in 2011.
  • Corps issues permit for Enbridge Line 5 maintenance work

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District Regulatory Office issued a nationwide permit verification to Enbridge Pipelines, LLC, on October 18, 2016, which authorizes maintenance to the Line 5 submerged pipeline crossing of the Straits of Mackinac.
  • Corps reopens river after emergency closure, hopes for best, prepares for worst

    In a proactive move to deter another river closure caused by aging infrastructure, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District, contractors installed anchors in the lower Ohio River bed at Locks and Dam 52, Brookport, Illinois, to assist the Corps workboat when raising the wicket dam during less-than-favorable conditions.

  • Proposed changes to Water Control Plan for Cherry Creek Dam near Denver, CO available for public comment

    Water managers for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District have released a Draft Report outlining proposed modifications to the Water Control Plan for Cherry Creek Dam during extreme flood events. The proposed plan allows water managers to release more water from the dam to reduce the risk of overtopping and failure. Public comments are being accepted on the report through November 18, 2016. Changes to the water control plan could be implemented as early as January 2017.

  • The USACE Tommy Schmidt National Dam Safety Professional of the Year Award for 2016

    The USACE Tommy Schmidt National Dam Safety Professional of the Year Award for 2016 was presented to Dr. Georgette Hlepas (DSMMCX) on 19 October 2016 during the first quarter meeting of the USACE Dam Safety Steering Committee in Boston, MA. The award is given annually to one deemed to have made the most significant contribution nationally to the USACE Dam Safety Program. Dr. Hlepas' contributions were multi-faceted, but some key accomplishments include peer review of instrumentation and monitoring programs for many districts across USACE, development and delivery of the new PROSPECT Instrumentation and Monitoring Course, and Chairing the USACE national Dam and Levee Performance Monitoring Committee. The Award was presented by Dave Paul, HQUSACE Special Assistant for Dam Safety.
