PIEDMONT, Mo., – The Clearwater Lake Army Corps of Engineers and League of Watershed Guardians have teamed up and are seeking volunteers and sponsors to pitch in for a two-day clean up from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 14 and 15 on the Black River.

National Public Lands Day: Saylorville Lake Area Clean-up
September 30th is National Public Lands Day and the US Army Corps of Engineers at Saylorville Lake is hosting a cleanup project beginning at 11AM, ending at 3PM. Join more than 175,000 volunteers around the nation by spending the day outdoors ensuring our public lands continue to be beautiful places for all to enjoy. Participants who would like to help clean up the environment around Saylorville Lake can sign up at the Saylorville Lake Visitor Center.

Chittenden Locks large lock to close 4 hours Oct. 3 and all day Oct. 11
The large lock at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard will close to all marine traffic from 8 a.m. until noon October 3 and from 11 p.m. October 10 until midnight October 11. The October 3 closure allows Navy divers to safely clean the maintenance gate seals. The 25-hour shutdown, beginning at 11 p.m. October 10, allows maintenance staff to test the new large pump’s dewatering capabilities.

Officials to delay opening Dismal Swamp Canal until end of October
Officials at the Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have delayed reopening the Dismal Swamp Canal until late October. “Recent weather events have delayed progress, and the latest condition survey of Turners Cut showed that additional dredging was needed,” said Keith Lockwood, Norfolk District Operations Branch chief.
