  • 19-109 Lower Snake River Dams closed for public dam crossing on Christmas and New Year's Day

    LOWER SNAKE RIVER, Wash. – All three dams on the lower Snake River in Washington that allow public vehicle crossings -- Lower Granite Lock and Dam, near Pomeroy; Little Goose, near Starbuck; and Lower Monumental, near Kahlotus -- will be closed to public access for crossing on Christmas and New Year’s Day.
  • Chicago District wins top USACE award for FY19 Small Business program

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Chicago District was recognized as the top district in USACE for awarding about 85% of its FY19 contracts to small businesses and about 20% of its contracts to disabled, veteran-owned small businesses at the 2019 Society of American Military Engineers’ Federal Small Business Conference in Dallas, Texas, last month. The awards, based Corps wide, were awarded by Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite, USACE commanding general, and Command Sgt. Maj. Bradley Houston, HQUSACE.
  • Draft EA for emergency repairs along the Platte River bank in Nebraska available for public comment

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is now taking comments until January 3, 2020 on a draft environmental assessment for a proposed breach repair along the Platte River bank just upstream of the confluence with the Missouri River near Plattsmouth. This repair is an emergency action in response to damage caused during the March 2019 flood event.
  • Corps steps down releases from Gavins Point Dam to winter release rate

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began reducing Gavins Point releases to the winter release rate on Nov. 30. The releases will be stepped down at a rate of 3,000 cubic feet per second per day until they reach 27,000 cfs where they are expected to remain through December. Releases will be reduced to 25,000 cfs in January and remain near that rate for the remainder of the winter. Gavins Point Dam winter releases normally range between 12,000 and 17,000 cfs. Higher-than-average winter releases from the Missouri River Mainstem System projects, including Gavins Point, continue emptying water from the 2019 runoff season still in storage.
  • Buffalo District and D’Youville College teach students to get their hands dirty

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District biologists recently taught D’Youville College students basic wetland delineation and fish population surveys as part of two separate labs for the D’Youville BIO 189-A Great Lakes laboratory course.
  • Whittier Narrows dam modification study complete, moves into design phase

    A highly anticipated modification study of a Southern California dam has been finalized by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and is now in the project’s design phase. The Whittier Narrows Dam Safety Modification Study was completed in June 2019 and approved by the Corps’ Headquarters in August. The design phase of the project began in October.
  • Stroupe is November Employee of the Month

    Jairus Stroupe from Project Operations is the Memphis District Employee of the Month for November. District Commander Col. Zachary Miller presented Stroupe with a special certificate and an on-the-spot cash award Dec. 3, for his outstanding job performance.
