    Corps closes recreation areas due to Willamette Valley fires

    Due to multiple fires burning throughout the Willamette Valley, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District is closing several recreation areas it manages near its dams.
  • Army Corps updates road closure status at Francis E. Walter Dam

    The U.S. Army Corps Engineers’ Philadelphia District announced the Route 940 entrance to the Francis E. Walter Dam will reopen on Sept. 18, 2020. The Bear Creek White Haven Road entrance to the dam will then close to traffic as road repairs shift to that area. Road repairs and paving work has been ongoing since June 2020 and is being conducted in phases. 
  • Potential Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) concern at Piedmont Lake

    HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Huntington District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has determined that conditions exist in the outlet works area at Piedmont Lake in Piedmont, Ohio, that could result in the presence and possible release of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gases.
  • Violent confluence of Columbia River and Pacific Ocean make jetty work … weighty

    During violent winter storms, waves taller than the length of six king-sized beds stacked end-to-end (40 feet) can meet the Columbia River as it makes its way out to the Pacific Ocean. This concentrated colliding of water makes crossing the bar incredibly dangerous, according to the Columbia River Maritime Museum. So precarious, in fact, that this channel had a nickname, “the graveyard of the Pacific,” at least until the U.S. government built critical infrastructure to reduce some of the risk.

    LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District lifts the small craft advisory for the Arkansas River. Small-craft advisories are issued when flows reach 70,000 cubic feet per second. While flows have receded, Corps officials urge boaters to always use caution when on the river.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District completed the Buffalo South breakwater construction on August 12, 2020 to repair 625 feet out of the 1,000 foot degraded section.
