From Antiquated to Automated: USACE wetland delineation tool helps revolutionize regulatory process
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, United States has lost more than half of its wetlands since the 1600s, and approximately 35 percent of the world’s wetlands were lost between 1970 and 2015. To protect against further impairment of wetlands and the essential functions they provide, the U.S. established a policy of "no net loss" of wetlands, as well as procedures to ensure responsible management of wetland resources.

UMRR Program - Steamboat Island HREP - Pool 14
The Steamboat Island Project is located in the middle section of Pool 14 along the right descending bank of the Upper Mississippi River (UMR), between the town of Princeton and the Wapsipinicon River. The goals are to maintain, enhance, and restore quality habitat for all native and desirable plant, animal, and fish species and maintain, enhance, restore, and emulate natural river processes, structures, and functions for a sustainable ecosystem.

Corps helps Southern Ute Tribe develop wetland program
Sacramento District regulatory staff in Colorado helped provide training to members of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe in early May, helping the tribe prepare their own wetland preservation program in Southwestern Colorado.

Chief of Engineers signs Grand River Basin Study – on to Congress
Lt. Gen. Scott A. Spellmon, USACE Commanding General and 55th U.S. Army Chief of Engineers, signed the Chief’s Report for the Grand River Basin Study on November 19, 2020. The signing of the report progresses the project to Congress for authorization. “I am grateful for the hard work of the entire team and for the outstanding partnership with the State of Missouri, other federal agencies, and the local communities in this area. The partnership is what made this important study successful. This is a great example of improving habitats and the environment while also increasing flood protection in an area. Ultimately, it will greatly benefit the people, the economy, the environment, and the many areas of the Grand River Basin,” said Col. Bill Hannan, commander, Kansas City District.

Waste Management Disposal Services of Maine seeks permit for landfill expansion in Norridgewock
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District received a permit application from Waste Management Disposal Services of Maine, Incorporated, for proposed work in freshwater wetlands adjacent to 357 Mercer Road, Norridgewock, Maine. The work involves a 48.6 acre expansion of an existing landfill on the 933 acre property the applicant owns.

Corps Approves Permit for Lordstown Battery Plant
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District’s Regulatory Division approved and issued a permit under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act (CWA) to General Motors, on behalf of GigaPower LLC, for the construction of a 3-million square-foot battery cell plant in the village of Lordstown, Ohio, April 14.
