    USACE provides power to hard-hit Louisiana

    Living in the 21st century, most Americans have electricity on demand. When it isn’t working, it usually doesn’t take longer than a day to get it turned back on. But what happens when a storm like Hurricane Laura hits? Close to 200,000 residents living in southwestern Louisiana lost power on Aug. 27. Many of them are still without it, weeks after the storm has come and gone. Delivering power to southwest Louisiana is one of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' top priorities. USACE is installing generators in several critical facilities like water pump stations, sewage lift stations, hospitals, radio towers, and corrections facilities, to name a few. The 23-person team responsible for installing these generators ensured they were in Louisiana before Hurricane Laura even made landfall.
  • Members of the Memphis District Emergency Power Planning and Response Team worked together Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, with local authorities in Plaquemines Parish, the Louisiana Army National Guard, the 249th Engineer Battalion (Prime Power) and contractor IAP to airlift an emergency generator. The 125 kilowatt generator was sling-loaded by the Louisiana Air National Guard and placed on top of a water storage tank at the Port Sulphur (Louisiana) Water Plant. Our 249th Prime Power Soldiers were on-site to assist with the placement of the generator, and then they installed the generator to power the storage pumps. The Port Sulphur facility provides fresh drinking water to the entire area by pulling water from the Mississippi River.

    USACE provides unified response to Hurricane Isaac

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Operations Center began closely tracking Hurricane Isaac, about a week before the storm actually made landfall as its predicted path became clearer. In advance of the storm making landfall, USACE had alerted several of its Planning and Response Teams even prepositioning them on the ground in the areas that were expected to be impacted by Isaac.
