Lake O sediment study release at S-308 postponed

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District will postpone Lake Okeechobee releases planned for April 21 from the Port Mayaca Lock and Dam (S-308) to support a U.S. Geological Survey and South Florida Water Management District ongoing Lake Okeechobee sediment study.

South Bay Boat Ramp closed temporarily April 12 and 13 due to construction

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District announces that the boat ramp at the South Bay Recreation Area will be closed temporarily on Monday, April 12 and Tuesday, April 13, 2021, due to cutoff wall construction on the Herbert Hoover Dike.

USACE to reduce Lake Okeechobee releases beginning April 3

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District will reduce Lake Okeechobee releases to coastal estuaries beginning Saturday in an effort to slow the lake’s recession rate. Releases to the Caloosahatchee will be reduced to 1,200 cubic feet per second (cfs) as measured at the W.P. Franklin Lock and Dam (S-79) and to 300 cfs as measured at the St. Lucie Lock and Dam (S-80).

Two-part LOSOM Project Delivery Team Technical Workshop scheduled for April 12 and 16

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, announces a two-part Technical Workshop for the Lake Okeechobee System Operating Manual (LOSOM) Project Delivery Team (PDT), to be held Monday, April 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Friday, April 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The presentations and discussions will be different on each day of the workshop.

USACE Adjusts Lake Okeechobee Releases

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District will reduce Lake Okeechobee releases to the Caloosahatchee River to 1,500 cubic feet per second (cfs) as measured at the W.P. Franklin Lock and Dam (S-79) beginning Saturday while making no changes to the current 500 cfs flow out of the St. Lucie Lock and Dam (S-80) that began March 6.

USACE begins releases to St. Lucie March 6

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District will begin 500 cubic feet per second (cfs) pulse releases from the St. Lucie Lock and Dam (S-80) beginning Saturday, March 6, as part of a planned deviation approved in September 2020 to reduce the risk of large lake releases during the rainy season when harmful algal blooms are more likely to be present.

Lake O flows adjusted to support Sediment Study

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Jacksonville District will make temporary deviation to the Lake Okeechobee release schedule this week to facilitate a study by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to develop methods to indirectly measure sediment transported from the lake to the estuaries.

Memory, flexibility drive Lake Okeechobee dry season strategy

When we developed the dry season water management strategy for Lake Okeechobee this year, we incorporated crucial flexibility to respond to the potential threat of algal blooms while also remembering the events over the last several years. We use these two concepts, memory and flexibility, to guide our strategy development.
