    HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The recreation area at the Greenup Locks and Dam in Greenup, Ky., has been closed to the public because of construction on the access road to the parking lot.

  • Greenup Construction—Congressional Visit

    The Greenup Locks and Dam, located on the Ohio River at Greenup, Kentucky, is one of the busiest locks in the Huntington District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. But maintenance work closed the main lock chamber since April 15, 2016, while crews removed -- and replaced - the massive miter gates at the downriver end of the lock. That can affect industry, causing barge traffic to slow down on the Ohio River -- and it brought a visit from Congressional representatives from three states -- Bill Johnson from Ohio's 6th District and Evan Jenkins from West Virginia's Third District as well as staff members from Senator Mitch McConnell's and Congressman Hal Rogers' of Kentucky offices.
  • Miter gate lift at the Greenup Locks and Dam

    Crews working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lifted the first of two Miter Gates into place on July 29, 2016, at the Greenup Locks and Dam on the Ohio River in Greenup, Ky. The gates, which are part of the Main Lock Chamber at Greenup, open and close to allow tows and other boat traffic to enter or exit the lock chamber. Each gate weighs approximately 250 tons. This is the first time the gates have been replaced since Greenup went into operation in 1959.

    Maintenance planned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Huntington District, will limit recreational boat lockages at the Greenup Locks and Dam on the Ohio River in Greenup, Ky., beginning April 15, 2016 and continuing until Sept. 30, 2016.
