Groundbreaking kicks off first of a four-phase Missouri River Levee Project

A groundbreaking event occurred Thursday, Nov. 3, 2016 for the first of four phases of the overall St. Joseph levee project. The City of St. Joseph, Mo., and Buchanan County hosted the event for project sponsors and stakeholders adjacent to the MRLS R471-460 levee unit northeast of Rosecrans Memorial Airport.

Corps announces project to replace the Spillway Bridge Deck over Tuttle Creek Dam

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District announced today a project to replace the Spillway Bridge Deck over the dam’s emergency spillway at the east end of Tuttle Creek Dam. The project, scheduled to begin in the late winter or early spring of 2017, is estimated to last 6-12 months,

Labor Day weekend earthquake doesn’t rattle district

The Sept. 3, 2016 5.6 magnitude earthquake reported in Pawnee, Okla., rattled several surrounding states, include several projects in the Kansas City District. When such events occur, dam surveillance plans and emergency action plans are in place so staff know how to respond.

Mega projects continue at McConnell Air Force Base

You’ve probably heard chatter about the KC-46A Pegasus aircraft. One of the Kansas City District’s largest projects is to provide support to the warfighter and the latest incoming equipment at McConnell Air Force Base. The KC-46A is an aerial refueling and strategic transport aircraft for the military. A new fleet of aircraft is scheduled to replace nearly 100 of the oldest KC-135E Stratotankers across the U.S., which have been in production since 1957.

Employee Spotlight: Katrina Marx

Katrina Marx is a structural engineer in the Design Branch. Marx came to Kansas City District in 2007 from private industry where she worked for a couple of bridge design firms. That unique experience led to her recent selection as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Load Rating Engineer.

Corps remains concerned about firewood helping spread invasive beetle

The invasive emerald ash borer continues to cause concern among U.S. Army Corps of Engineers natural resource managers who ask the public not to bring firewood from home to public wildlife lands and unknowingly transport the insect to new areas.

Stakeholders, customers see Corps Civil Works projects on river trip

Stakeholders, customers and elected officials were guests of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Kansas City District for the annual Missouri River Tour Aug. 16. The purpose of the trip aboard the district’s barge is to provide a first-hand look at the Civil Works projects the district builds and maintains along the Missouri River and to receive questions and comments from stakeholders.

Kansas City District welcomes new commander

In a historic military tradition, command of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Kansas City District transferred today from Col. Andrew D. Sexton to Col. Douglas B. Guttormsen. In a ceremony at the national World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, Mo., Guttormsen received the traditional guidon from Sexton thus assuming command of the district.

Operation Dry Water in effect June 24-26 – law enforcement targeting BUI

Boating under the influence accounts for approximately 25 percent of boating-related fatalities on lakes in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Kansas City District. To raise awareness about the effects of boating under the influence, the USACE will participate in the safe boating initiative Operation Dry Water June 24-26.
