Higher Columbia River water levels possible this fall

River levels between John Day and McNary dams could be higher during the next three months, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today. From October through December, Lake Umatilla, the section of the Columbia River above John Day Dam, will be operated in a broader and higher range. That means river users could see river levels 2.5 feet higher than in the spring and summer.

Corps Seeks Public Comment on Long-Term Release of Additional Stored Water from Willow Creek Dam

PORTLAND, Ore. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in cooperation with the Bureau of Reclamation, is seeking public comment on the draft Supplemental Environmental Assessment (SEA) and draft Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the long-term release of an additional 1,000 acre-feet (AF) of stored water for irrigation from the Willow Creek Dam and Lake Project.

Corps awards hatchery operations contract

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $6.2 million contract to Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to operate and maintain the Bonneville Fish Hatchery, on the Columbia River. The firm-fixed contract is for one year, with two consecutive option years, if exercised, in-order-to produce fall Chinook to aid in mitigation obligations for The Dalles and John Day dams.

ISIS, potential dam collapse make deployment memorable

Richard Benoit, Portland District dive team proponent and program manager, has been deployed for more than a year, first to Afghanistan and now to Iraq. This is his seventh overseas deployment, but his first to the Middle East, where he is serving as the Corps’ dive safety officer and dive safety inspector for the Mosul Dam rehabilitation and repair project.
