17 Central Valley levee systems lose eligibility for federal rehab assistance
A total of 17 levee systems in or near Sacramento, Stockton, Chester, and Knights Landing and Gustine are now ineligible for federal rehabilitation assistance after a temporary agreement between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the state of California extending eligibility for deficient levees expired in June.

Sacramento District wraps up vital Napa River ARRA construction contract
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District would like to change that history, as it will wrap up construction Aug. 3, 2012 on a significant effort in downtown Napa to raise 3,300 feet of railroad tracks as much as six feet and construct two new bridges to help reduce the city's flood risk.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District awarded a $14.6 million contract July 16 to Mascon Inc. of Sacramento for the construction of a public safety center facility at Defense Distribution Depot San Joaquin in Tracy.

South Pacific Division Commander Promoted to Brigadier General
Acting Army Chief of Engineers Maj. Gen. Merdith “Bo” Temple promoted South Pacific Division Commander Col. Michael C. Wehr to the rank of Brigadier General March 15 in a ceremony at the San Francisco War Memorial Veterans Building.

FUDS Exhibit Draws a Crowd at El Centro Air Show
Have you ever been outside riding your bike or camping and stumbled upon something that looked suspiciously like a bomb or a dangerous object? If you did, what was your reaction? Did you want to pick it up? Well don’t do it!!! If you didn’t drop it, don’t pick it up! RECOGNIZE!! RETREAT!! REPORT!! These were the messages the Corps’ Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) team was communicating during the El Centro, Calif., Air Show March 10.

Lakes gain merit for significant water safety programs
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (March 21, 2012) – Despite tightened project budgets and limited resources, two Nashville District lakes were nationally and internationally recognized recently for their staffs’ creative and resourceful efforts to increase public safety during the 2011 recreation season.

Corps and LA County break ground for Tujunga Wash restoration
LOS ANGELES--U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District and Los Angeles County officials broke ground Feb. 22 on a project designed to restore degraded habitat in the San Fernando Valley. Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Public Works Deputy Director Mark Pestrella and District Commander Col. Mark Toy ceremonially turned dirt for the start of the $7 million Tujunga Wash Ecosystem Restoration project that will extend greening along the sides of a 3/4-mile stretch of concrete channel that carries runoff from Hansen Dam to the Los Angeles River.
