  • Army Corps to hold public comment meeting for F.E. Walter Dam recreation plan

    The U.S. Army Corps Engineers’ Philadelphia District will host a meeting to review the 2013 Francis E. Walter Dam recreation plan and solicit feedback for next year’s plan. The meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Nov. 7 at the Holiday Inn Express in White Haven, Pa. (intersection of Rt 940 and Northeast Extension of the Pa Turnpike).

    Keansburg, N.J. -- Hurricane Sandy severely impacted large portions of the northeastern United States. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ previously constructed hurricane shore protection project in Keansburg, New Jersey was damaged. Damages included a loss of beach fill sand and damages to levee closure gates that were a part of the original project constructed in 1973.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District awarded a $36.9 million contract to Great Lakes Dredge Dock, LLC of Oak Brook, Illinois to place approximately 1.1 million cubic yards of sand at Keansburg, New Jersey as part of an emergency shore protection project affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The Corps updated the plan, which states whitewater and fisheries releases will be added if enough water storage is accumulated in the reservoir. Wet conditions throughout the summer have allowed the Corps to add the 5th, 6th, and 7th increments of the plan.
