Corps booth at Fair garners ‘reserve grand champion’ ribbon
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Water Safety Booth at the Kansas State Fair won a top honor here Thursday, Sep. 12, 2013. The indoor booth received the “reserve grand champion” ribbon for the caliber of appearance of the booth and the value it provides to fair visitors.

USACE Galveston District stresses water safety during this Labor Day weekend
GALVESTON, Texas (Aug. 29, 2013) – The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District joins its partners: Safe Kids Greater Houston, Telemundo, Schlitterbahn Galveston Island Waterpark and Bass Pro Shops, in encouraging safe water recreation activities over the Labor Day weekend.

Independence Day on the Okeechobee Waterway
The W.P. Franklin South Recreation Area in Alva was a popular destination on the July 4th weekend, receiving more than 2,000 visitors. The swim beach provided a welcome place for families to splash, play and stay cool.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Tioga-Hammond and Cowanesque Lakes invites the public to attend a water rescue demonstration on the Hammond Lake near the swimming area at Ives Run Recreation Area on Saturday, August 31 at 11 a.m.

Motorboat Operator training provides certification and skills needed to perform a wide range of duties
In May and June, the South Florida Operations Office hosted a 32-hour motorboat licensing course and two 8-hour refresher courses at the W.P. Franklin Lock Recreation Area on the Okeechobee Waterway. Thirteen Jacksonville District employees participated in the program, designed to ensure that operators are adequately trained, properly tested and licensed prior to the official operation of any Corps boat or vessel less than 26 feet in length.

Retired teacher volunteers to educate children about water safety
With the spirit of a lifelong educator, retired schoolteacher Pam VanderWeele has shown the reach and impact that U.S. Army Corps of Engineers volunteers can have on communities and people.As a water safety volunteer at Lake Texoma this summer, VanderWeele visited 17 elementary schools surrounding the lake in Texas and Oklahoma, giving presentations to more than 2,000 students in the third through fifth grades.

Corps and Bass Pro Shops partner to promote water safety
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District teamed with Bass Pro Shops in Southern California to handout materials emphasizing water and boating safety during Bass Pro Shops “Family Summer Camp” campaign from June 8 to July 14. The effort stemmed from the Corps and Bass Pro Shops signing a partnership agreement in late 2012 to develop projects nationally to improve fish habitat and water and boater safety education.
