  • Growing the next generation: Safety and occupational health professionals gather for annual conference

    Springtime in the Midwest can be volatile as temperatures fluctuate and severe weather is common. This time of year often prompts safety drills across the region. Perhaps it was not a coincidence then that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Safety and Occupational Health Program’s community of practice gathered in the heartland — Kansas City, Missouri — for their annual community of practice meeting. The theme of this year’s meeting was “growing the next generation.” Safety and occupational health professionals from across the USACE enterprise came to Kansas City, Missouri, to discuss all things safety and occupational health. The five-day community of practice meeting was a chance for staff from all districts, divisions and headquarters to convene in one location and discuss current operations and the future of the program in USACE.

  • Concrete is hard: Materials workshop keeps technical staff skills sharp

    Recently, members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Alaska District’s Construction Division, Civil and Sanitary Section and Geotechnical and Materials Section participated in a field concrete and materials workshop at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. The event included classroom instruction, applied training and a written exam for attendees to obtain the American Concrete Institute’s foundational Level One Field Concrete Certification, which acts as the industry standard for engineers and construction workers around the world.

  • Military night operations training to be held at McNary Lock and Dam March 25 through 27

    UMATILLA, OR. -  Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord will conduct military night operations training at McNary Lock and Dam from Monday, March 25 through Wednesday, March 27. The training employs the use of helicopters and simulated munitions to make the exercise as realistic as possible. The training will primarily occur after sunset.

    PADUCAH, Ky. (March 11, 2024) – Corps of Engineers officials equipped park rangers throughout the Cumberland River Basin with the tools of the trade during a workshop March 5-7 at the West Kentucky Community and Technical College Emerging Technology Center in Paducah, Kentucky.

  • District holds flood fight training as it pours outside

    As atmospheric rivers drenched California once again, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers San Francisco District held their annual Flood Fight Team training Feb. 5 to enhance their technical expertise in understanding USACE and state existing emergency and flood fight related policies and best practices. Emergency Management Chief Holly Costa and Dam and Levee Safety Program Manager Cyrus Yaghobi taught the half-day training, which was attended by the San Francisco team in-person at the district’s headquarters and joined by the Sacramento District’s flood fight team virtually.

  • Long Branch Lake holds joint emergency preparedness exercise

    Officials held an emergency preparedness tabletop exercise at Long Branch Lake in Macon, Missouri, on Jan. 24, 2024, to showcase the joint emergency preparedness between local, state and federal agencies in the area. The tabletop exercise was coordinated and led by the Kansas City District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and focused on the communication and coordination efforts during operational releases or an extreme, rare flood event. During the exercise, USACE emphasized that it regularly assesses the conditions and risks associated with Long Branch Dam, along with its other civil works projects.
