  • Bluebird Monitoring Volunteer Opportunities

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Mobile District at West Point Project is seeking volunteers to assist with bluebird nesting box monitoring during the March to August breeding season. Prospective volunteers should be available to inspect their assigned nesting boxes every two weeks during the breeding season. USACE will provide data logs and maps to the locations of the assigned nesting boxes.

  • Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin Changes to Lock Schedules

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District will change to the spring/summer lock schedules beginning the week of March 2, 2014 on the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin (ACF). George W. Andrews, Walter F. George, and Jim Woodruff Locks will move to Friday - Monday operations, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. This schedule will continue until October 2014.

  • Why students should care about engineering

    Why should American students care about pursuing engineering careers? Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are communicating the answer to students throughout the year—and especially during National Engineers Week, which runs this year from Feb. 16 through Feb. 22.

  • USACE Galveston District to begin maintenance work at Colorado River Locks; advises of temporary lock closures

    MATAGORDA, Texas (Feb. 14, 2014) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District will begin maintenance repair work at the Colorado River Locks in Matagorda, Texas, to include installation of an impressed current cathodic protection system on the eight sector gates to extend the life of the navigation structures.

  • Drought leads to low lake level at Texoma; boaters should be vigilant

    TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers advises visitors to Lake Texoma of the impact an extreme drought is having on the lake level. The current water level is several feet below normal and the Corps urges boaters to be vigilant when on the water. There is water for boating and other activities, however visitors should keep the following in mind:

  • Jacksonville District completes construction at Portugues Dam

    “Entonces, felicidades en sus logros,” (Congratulations on your accomplishments). That was the key message from Jo-Ellen Darcy, Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works), to those who attended a dedication ceremony Feb. 5 celebrating completion of Portugues Dam, a $386 million structure designed to reduce flooding impacts in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

  • Florida wetlands among those receiving international attention: Annual World Wetlands Day is February 2

    The United States of America is one of 168 contracting parties in the Ramsar Convention, and has 35 sites that are classified as Wetlands of International Importance. Four are located in Florida.

  • District welcomes middle school’s First Lego® League

    Jacksonville District continues to make strides in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education, as employees hosted students from JEB Stuart Middle School’s First Lego® League (FLL) at the district’s headquarters office. The event provided a view of the STEM disciplines as they are used in Corps career fields.

  • Old Hickory hydropower sparks interest of medical students

    HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 6, 2014) – Seventeen students from Nashville General Hospital School of Radiology at Murrey Medical College received a hands-on review of principles in electricity when they took an in-depth tour of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s Old Hickory Lock and Dam.
