  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Guam sign feasibility cost-share agreement for Agana River civil works study

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) signed a feasibility cost-share agreement (FCSA) with the government of Guam to initiate a civil works study, investigating ways to reduce the risk of flooding to Hagatna, Guam. Funding is provided in Public Law 116-20, through the Additional Supplemental Appropriations Disaster Relief Act, 2019, signed into law June 6, 2019. The appropriation assists with the recovery and resiliency-building efforts throughout the U.S. Pacific Territories in response to major storms affecting the region between 2017 and 2019. At a ceremony held March 10 in Hagatna, Honolulu District Commander Lt. Col. Kathryn Sanborn and Guam Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero signed the Agana River (Hagatna River Flood Control) flood risk management study agreement. The three-year, $3 million study is 100 percent federally funded and will be managed by Honolulu District’s Civil and Public Works branch.

    Due to concerns on the spread of the Coronavirus and based on guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all scheduled events and programs at Blue Marsh Lake are cancelled until the end of the April.

  • A Civil Works titan retires from 40-year research career with the Corps

    A noteworthy but humble figure exited the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Environmental Laboratory for the last time, February 28, 2020. Dr. Alfred Cofrancesco, Jr. retired from his position as senior scientific technical manager and director of the Civil Works environmental research area for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

  • Corps of Engineers taking precautions, Visitor Centers closed

    Due to health precautions regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19), all Kansas City District Visitor Centers are closed. Safety is our number one priority. Nothing is more important than the safety of our visitors, customers, contractors and our people. We will continue to monitor the situation and will provide timely updates regarding other potential facility closures at our lakes on our websites and/or social sites.

  • USACE continues work on LORS deviation

    After he took charge of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District in 2018, Col. Andrew Kelly charged his team to look for tools that would offer different options for the management of water in Lake Okeechobee during times when harmful algal blooms (HABs) were present. Significant HAB events affected Lake Okeechobee and the coastal estuaries in 2016 and 2018. Jacksonville District engineers and biologists reviewed the Lake Okeechobee Regulation Schedule (LORS) and looked for potential tools to adjust operations in anticipation of possible future HAB events. Last summer, Jacksonville District rolled out a proposed deviation to LORS that would provide greater flexibility in the management of water with the goal of reducing the health risk to the public associated with HABs.

  • USACE West Point To Host Free Boating Safety Course

    MOBILE, Ala. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at West Point Lake — in partnership with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 08-01 — will conduct a personal watercraft and boating safety course April 11, 2020, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. EST at the West Point Project Management Office in West Point, Georgia. This free USCG Auxiliary course will provide information on legal requirements, navigation rules, preventing personal watercraft and boating accidents, and new boating laws.

  • USACE Buffalo District substantially completes Stanford Run ecosystem restoration project

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District (USACE) substantially completed the Stanford Run ecosystem restoration project located within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP) in Summit County, Ohio, in early January 2020. The Buffalo District restored nearly 1,200 feet of a small stream within CVNP named Stanford Run under the original Stanford Run Restoration Project contract awarded to Ryba Marine Construction Co. The District also awarded a second, follow-on contract to Armitage Architecture, P.C. at the end of September 2019 to continue restoration on the channel, which restored an additional 1,000 lineal feet.

  • UPDATE: Corps to Host Virtual Meeting on General Motors Permit

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District will no longer host the previously-scheduled public meeting about the General Motors permit application to construct a mass-production battery-manufacturing plant in Lordstown, Ohio. Instead, the district will host a virtual meeting to collect community input about the permit application.

  • Great Lakes water levels remain high going into the spring

    DETROIT- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, announces that despite a dry month of February across the Great Lakes basin, water levels on each of the Great Lakes remain very high going into the spring. Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie set new monthly records for February 2020. The records were previously set on lakes Superior, Michigan and Huron in 1986, and in 1987 on Lake Erie.
