    GRAND RIVERS, Ky. (Aug. 19, 2013) – The 91-foot tall lower miter gates at Kentucky Lock was a beehive of activity today as workmen assembled wraparound scaffolding in preparation for making needed repairs on the gates.

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 15, 2013) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District is celebrating 125 years of service to the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers Basins and to the Nation that began when the district was created Aug. 18, 1888 under the command of Lt. Col. John W. Barlow.

  • Corps and USFWS to sign Conservation Plan

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mississippi Valley Division (MVD), will sign a formal Conservation Plan with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to better protect three endangered species native to the lower Mississippi River - the Interior Least Tern, Pallid Sturgeon and Fat Pocketbook Mussel.

  • Portugués Dam nears completion

    Despite the threat from Tropical Storm Chantal, more than 30 residents from Ponce, Puerto Rico and surrounding areas attended a meeting July 9 to learn more about Jacksonville District’s Portugués Dam, which is nearing completion after several years of design and construction.

    Two major milestones have been met, with the release of the draft tentatively selected plan for the Jacksonville Harbor Deepening Study and the Port Everglades Feasibility Study.

  • Obama stresses importance of ports during visit to Jacksonville

    Addressing a standing-room-only audience at JAXPORT July 25, President Barack Obama stressed the importance of maintaining the nation’s ports and aging infrastructure. Hundreds gathered to hear Obama’s plan for moving the economy forward, starting with passing legislation to authorize two local port projects that would put people back to work in Jacksonville. “In a couple of years, new supertankers are going to start coming through the Panama Canal,” said Obama. “We want those supertankers to come here, to Jacksonville.”

  • Corps of Engineers presents Grand Forks, N.D., resident with National Water Safety award

    Maj. Gen. John Peabody, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Mississippi Valley Division commander, presented Carma Hanson of Grand Forks Safe Kids a National Water Safety award on behalf of the National Water Safety Congress at the Grand Forks, N.D., airport July 31.
