23-056 Dworshak Dam releases to increase beginning December 4 for turbine testing

AHSAHKA, Idaho – Dworshak Dam will be increasing releases starting Dec. 4 to accommodate testing required for turbine maintenance. The public can expect the Clearwater River below the dam to change several feet between December 4 and 9. River users should use caution.

23-048 Dworshak Dam releases to fluctuate between 2,400 and 5,000 cfs on Oct. 5 and 6 for testing

AHSAHKA, Idaho – Operators of Dworshak Dam will increase flows from 1,700 to 2,400 cubic feet per second on the evening of Oct. 4 to help minimize stage changes during testing on the following days. Between Thursday, Oct. 5 and Friday, Oct. 6, releases will fluctuate due to testing required as part of annual turbine maintenance.

Larger than life: A history of Dworshak Dam

In May 1948, floodwaters on the Columbia River overtopped the cofferdam where construction was underway on McNary Lock and Dam. This flood, one of the largest on record, was one of many documented in the region since the mid-1880s. The propensity for flooding in the Northwest sparked much discussion about regional flood control.

Just below Dworshak Dam, on the shore of the Clearwater River, lies the Dworshak National Fish Hatchery (DNFH). The DNFH raises millions of salmon and steelhead smolts every year to be released into the river and make their way down to the ocean.

22-021 Dworshak Dam discharge to increase to support hatchery releases

AHSAHKA, Idaho –Dworshak Dam is currently discharging 7,100 cubic feet per second (cfs). Discharges will remain steady for the next week before increasing to 9,500 cfs to support local hatchery releases. Discharge for the remainder of the month, after hatchery releases are concluded, is expected to be in the approximate range of 8,000 to 10,500 cfs.

20-053 Anglers and recreationalists beware of fluctuating water levels on the Clearwater and the North Fork of the Clearwater

Ahsahka, Idaho. – Dworshak Dam powerhouse will conduct testing on one of their hydropower units on October 13 and 14, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The test will increase the flow from the powerhouse, resulting in fluctuations of water depth and flow on both the Clearwater and the North Fork of the Clearwater rivers.
