  • District launches Houston area flood risk data online tool

    GALVESTON, Texas (Sept. 1, 2016) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District launched a web-based tool today, called the Metropolitan Houston Regional Watershed and Waterway Flood Risk Management Systems Performance Evaluation, to inform users about local flooding events and provide updates regarding the district’s flood risk management system capabilities.

    GALVESTON, Texas (Sep. 1, 2016) – Gerson Reyes was born in Central America, during a difficult time of conflict between his homeland and El Salvador. The hostilities became so prevalent that the U.S. Army was sent to his country to provide aid, infrastructure and to help bring stability to the region. At an outpost just outside of his hometown, Reyes’ frequent interactions with the Soldiers soon turned to admiration for their mission, which even years after they had departed left him inspired to one day become a Solider for the Corps.

  • No change to flows from Lake Okeechobee

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District plans no changes to its current “pulse-release” pattern from Lake Okeechobee over the next week. The target flow for the Caloosahatchee Estuary remains at a seven-day average of 2,800 cubic feet per second (cfs) as measured at W.P. Franklin Lock & Dam (S-79) located near Fort Myers. The target flow for the St. Lucie Estuary remains at a seven-day average of 650 cfs as measured at St. Lucie Lock & Dam (S-80) near Stuart.

  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers launches second year of Every Kid in a Park program

    WASHINGTON (September 1, 2016) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced today it will continue its support of President Obama’s initiative, the Every Kid in a Park pass program, which officially begins its second year today. Launched last year, the initiative gives fourth grade students and their families free access to federal lands and waters as well as some state parks for a full school year.

  • Army Black Hawk flights scheduled over Galveston/Houston area

    GALVESTON, Texas (Aug. 31, 2016) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District will coordinate four Army Black Hawk helicopters to fly over Galveston Island and the Houston area Sept. 7, 2016, as part of an annual hurricane exercise to track the 2008 Hurricane Ike path and view critical infrastructure and areas that could be affected if a hurricane hit the Galveston/Houston area.
