• Understanding the Disease Vector Operational Environment by Predicting Presence of Anopheles Mosquito Breeding Sites Using Maximum Entropy Modeling and the Maxent Software Platform

    Purpose: This technical note (TN) describes research using the maximum entropy model to predict the presence of breeding sites for mosquitos of the genus Anopheles throughout the Korean peninsula. This methodology is also applicable to many other types of ecological niche modeling problems where analysts only have access to data related to the location a species has been found. The purpose of this study is to help address the need for new and innovative methods that promote military readiness through better understanding of vector-borne disease threats in familiar and unfamiliar operational environments. These methods can be used to provide military planners with valuable information to support their operations, particularly when operations expand into areas lacking direct disease vector surveillance. Disease vector risk information is vital for force readiness, because historically, soldiers are more likely to be unable to perform warfighting due to disease and non-combat injuries than as a direct result of combat (U.S. Department of the Army 2015).

  • Corps awards $81 million in construction contracts for Everglades restoration

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District, awarded four construction contracts for ecosystem restoration in south Florida in the past week, valued at more than $81 million. The construction projects include the Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands, Central Everglades Planning Project (CEPP) South, and Picayune Strand Restoration Projects, which are components of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP).
  • USACE Vicksburg District resumes collection of recreation area fees

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District will resume the collection of fees at its recreation sites’ day use areas beginning Oct. 1. Fee collections were suspended earlier this year when recreation areas were closed due to COVID-19 precautions. The USACE Vicksburg District has collected camping fees through online reservations at www.recreation.gov and will continue this system across its projects in Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana.
  • System 12 Slope Flattening Project contract awarded

    Congratulations to the System 12 Slope Flattening Project Delivery Team for reaching its Contract Award milestone. The PDT awarded the contract to SYTE Corporation on September 22. The work consists of furnishing all plant, labor and materials for flattening the slope for a 5,700-foot section of levee by placement of compacted fill.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District will host a virtual public meeting on Thursday, Oct. 15 and another on Friday Oct. 16 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. (Central Standard Time), to gather input on developing a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to evaluate granting an easement to Dakota Access, LLC to cross Corps-administered federal land at the Oahe Dam and Reservoir Project on the Missouri River.
